|
|
I have emerged Gnome-light and GAIM and when it notifies me that I have an e-mail, it will open gedit (or when epiphany is installed, it will open that browser). How do I get GAIM to open a different browser? Such as a new tab in my existing Firefox window?

| There is no preferences menu? There's Tools | Preferences, but I don't see a default browser setting. Or maybe I'm blind... |

In my version of gaim 1.1.4 browser settings come under tools>preferences.
May be you need to check your version or eyesight

| If you compiled Gaim with the "gnome" USE flag, then you will not see that option because it uses the default browser set in GNOME. |

Well, I have two browsers installed. Mozilla and Firefox. It opens gedit instead (it's certainly not the default browser). I thought I had this problem before becuase I *had* Epiphany installed and then switched to Gnome-light after using Gnome for a while... And GAIM never updated itself. But this time, it's a clean 2005.0 install and it does the same thing (gedit). Going through the Gnome menu to Preferred Applications, the Web Browser option says Firefox. So, that's what is set, but it doesn't work.
I'm not aware of any "gnome" use flag for GAIM. Gnome and gtk2 (were there from before the X install) are in my use flags though, so it was compiled with that flag. |

I have gnome in my USE flags in make.conf but it still shows the option

It is the same way for me in my Ubuntu installation, which is what made me think it was based on the gnome USE flag. I am pretty much lost now. |

i don't have it either but i'm using epiphany.
you can set the default gnome browser with
| Code: | gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/http/command -t string '/usr/bin/firefox %s'
gconftool-2 --set /desktop/gnome/url-handlers/https/command -t string '/usr/bin/firefox %s'
|
and set
| Code: | newtype=${MOZILLA_NEWTYPE:-"tab"}
|
in /usr/bin/firefox to get it in a new tab. |

| Set another defaultbrowser in gnome preferences, as gaim uses gnome's default browser. You may need to emerge gnome-base/control-center. |

| control-center was emerged previously. I switched the preferences from custom (the default it gave me) to Firefox. Same thing, it pops open gedit. So, I changed it to Mozilla instead. Same thing happens. I then chose '/usr/bin/firefox %s' as a custom setting in the Preferred Applications applet and I still get the same thing where it opens gedit. |

Out of curosity do you have something like this
| Code: |
<pref name='browsers'>
<pref name='place' type='int' value='3' />
<pref name='command' type='string' value='' />
<pref name='browser' type='string' value='opera' />
</pref>
|
in your ~/.gaim/prefs.xml
or does it make any diff if u add it?

<pref name='place' type='int' value='0' />
<pref name='command' type='string' value='' />
<pref name='browser' type='string' value='mozilla' />
</pref> |
Should I change 'mozilla' for 'firefox'?
Edit:
I changed it to firefox and it still opens gedit. Of course, Mozilla (the suite) IS installed, so at least it should have opened that. |

I have 3 choices in my browser options apart from the custom one. this might be indicated by the '3' in
| Code: |
<pref name='place' type='int' value='3' />
|
But in your case it is 0, so gaim is probably not finding any browser.
To set a custom browser do
| Code: |
<pref name='browsers'>
<pref name='place' type='int' value='3' />
<pref name='command' type='string' value='firefox %s' />
<pref name='browser' type='string' value='custom' />
</pref>
|
the value might be 0 in your case
All the above is a guess, and it may or may not work.

I tried as you suggested and it still opens gedit. I did a Google search for "gaim.xml browsers" and got no results. |

Note that the email notifications actually have to do some work-around for auto-login. To do this, gaim writes a local file and opens that. Realise then that gnome has different "preferred browser" settings for http/https:// vs file://. Change the file:// url handler to firefox and it should behave as you expect.
edit: s/gaim/gnome/ for browser settings |

| I'm not sure where s/gaim/gnome is in order to edit it. I have tried changing the "Preferred Applications" options to other browsers as well as using Firefox for text files. None of that helped. Is there somewhere else to edit it? |

That "edit" line in my earlier post was just to inform what I had edited in my post. I wasn't telling you to do anything. |
