vcd stops in mplayer and xine

at the weekend i wanted to watch a movie on vcd. but whatever i tried, the movie players (tested mplayer and xine) stopped playing the video when the film was about the 20th minute.

well... i think it failed because the cd had a "hanger", but is there any way to fix this? i looked at the cdr and it didnt seem to be damaged. also the players simply stopped without any error message. is this normal? what do i have to do to those players or my cdrom in linux to have bit error correction, or is there no way to do this?
