|
|
I stopped editing this after realizing that the update script didn't really update my system to the 2005.0 profile
Story
I really don't know what exactly is wrong with my ut2004 or my system. I can only attempt to explain what I'm experiencing.
Basically what happens is the game completely pauses itself, and the rest of the system, for various periods of time. During level loads it happens for 1 minute for the NvidiaLogo.ut2 intro level, and about 10 minutes for any default DeathMatch level. If you look carefully at the picture below, you will notice that the pause happens after the level is loaded, when the hdd usage is 0%. Mid-game it happens for a few seconds. Mid-game occurances are hard to categorize. They happen throughout. Sometimes I feel like it happens when the game loads new content or mixes a complex combination of sounds, but that is not a consistent observation. To give a clearer picture (no pun intended) of what I'm experiencing I decided to illustrate with a simple run of the game through the intro map, idling in the main menu, and quitting the game. Here is what I captured using gkrellm graphs:
http://img121.exs.cx/img121/2990/ut2k4graph7ao.png
It should be pretty explanatory. The "sys" cpu usage rises to an unreasonable 100%. One thing that the image doesn't show is that the rest of the system, namely music, stutters/lags at the same time as ut2004 pauses.
Info
I am posting this in order to find anyone who has or has been having exactly the same issues. As a result I will just post as much info about my system+setup as possible in the order that I discover/remember it. I will update the post upon request with revelant info.

I got comparable problems concerning loadtime and 'stalling' screens. Even when i set every option to minimal... So my hardware also can't be the problem. |

FWIW I'm havin gthe same problem with amd64. Recent changes include updating to 2.6.11-r2 and ut2004 3355. But basically to describe my problem-- the game suddenly "stops". Becomes SUPER (and I mean SUPER) slow and unresponsive. Breaking into the shell on another terminal and killing ut2004 seems to fix it-- the only thing that stops is the UI. Someone needs to file a bug w/this on https://bugzilla.icculus.org/ I think, unless it turns out to be the new kernel (I see that r3 was just released)

This problem is a result of PCI-E and the missing agpgart.
My old system (amd64 + agp) failed the same way if i forgot to load
the agpgart. But i only see this problem with ut2004, doom3 + enemy territory is working great. |

Using the new nvidia-kernel-1.0.7167-r1 ebuild solved the problem,
for the first time ut is playable using pci-e and nvidia |

I have reasons to believe that my problem was related to npltonly glibc.
After completely wiping the system (for a different reason) and reinstalling. Then upgrading to 2005.0, then compiling the linux threads verison of glibc together with an nptl one. UT2004 runs just fine. |
