The confusing part in all of this is that the AGP isn't actually controlled by the chipset, it's controlled by the CPU. I'm still wondering if disabling the on-board video would help.

To get any performance out of any games with the ati drivers i have to do the following.
Code:
export LIBGL_DRIVERS_PATH=/usr/X11R6/lib32/modules/dri

Then run game.

Does anyone else think its about time to retire this thread? ATI Drivers have been available now for about 3 months and do provide acceleration. Maybe at least get rid of this sticky on the thread.

Hi!

I'm facing hard problems with the ati-drivers and 3D acceleration.
I spent one month try solving them by myself but now I give up and I ask your help.

Here is my hardware:

Motherboard: ASROCK K8 Upgrade
CPU: Athlon 64
Graphic adapter: ATI Radeon 9250

I followed all the instruction according to the ati radeon HOWTO and the ati radeon FAQ.
In particular, I thought I solved the problem when I found that question 4.3 of the FAQ was similar to my problem: I changed my bios options, I changed in xorg.conf "UseFastTLS" to 2 but ........ nothing.
I hope that's something stupid but I am not able to solve it by myself.
I attach for your reference Xorg.0.log, xorg.conf and .config.

Thanks in advance.

@Paul Yard: You have a SIS760 chipset, see the post above yours for the solution.

Well I disabled agpgart and drm in the kernel and I still get
Code:
FATAL: Error inserting fglrx (/lib/modules/2.6.11-gentoo-r3/video/fglrx.ko): No such device
whenever I do modprobe fglrx I looked at the emerge output and I do not see any warning stating that the module would not be built, yet still I get no fglrx module any ideas?

sounds like your chip is not in the driver yet. I went thru that with my X800. I did the ChipId hack to my fglrx.ko and problem was solved.

Ok so what you are saying is since I have an x600 I'm screwed right? That is pretty funny if its true since ati's website claims these drivers support pci-E cards..... What did you do to get yours to work?

Ok problem solved fglrx is loading now that I bothered to upgrade to r7. Now its time to do totally pointless things with my new found 3d support.

Update With flgrx enabled my fps seems to have gone down when compared to the stock mesa drivers what the hell gives?

You probably enabled vertical sync when you configured the drivers. That will restrict your fps to your vertical refresh rate I believe.

Let me try hacking xorg.conf I'll let you know if X survives my attempt.

I can't find a reference to a vertical sync option in my xorg.conf out side the monitors vertical sync rate, and I'm stuck in X as it is right now because wxGTK refuses to finish building [I hate this library so much it always takes an eternity.] I will try and test things later today before class assuming I can get out of bed.

I went thru the posts in here, and tried to apply some tips, but the thing is, xine still feels sluggish, and it kinda steals too much cpu. If I play a movie and move terminal window around, it doesnt refresh desktop that good at all.

It was even better on my old dell laptop with p3@800MHz.

Hardware:
Acer Ferrari 3400
1Gb RAM
Radeon 9700 128Mb

Redo your fglrxconfig, the option is there, its buried in the xorg.conf file.

It's the "Capabilities" option. When the 3rd digit from the right is set to "8", that means v-sync is on. To turn it off, change the "8" to a "0" and restart X.

I wan't to install the ati-drivers 8.13.3 because I have a xpress 200 MOBO, but I can only find 8.12.10 on my emerge tree, where can I get the 8.13.3?

As you can see here they are hardmasked. You need to unmask them in /etc/portage/package.unmask like this:

Code:

=ati-drivers-8.13.3

I'm getting the same error message as Shadow Skill did, on a fresh install ( I had a brain fart and tried Pure64 for a while).

I'm on an eMachines m6805 laptop. I think I've read just about every thread on the AMD64-ATi stuff, and I don't see a solution anywhere.
If I missed it, please someone point it out. Otherwise, Any suggestions?

Using version 8.14.13-r1 of the drivers on Radeon 9200 PRO. Everything seems to be loading correctly in the xorg.log file, and I can see the frglx module present. However I still don't have direct OpenGL. If I run the folllowing command:

LIBGL_DEBUG=verbose fglrxinfo

I get this output:
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 8.14.13 atiogl_a (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so failed (/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
libGL error: unable to find driver: atiogl_a_dri.so
libGL: XF86DRIGetClientDriverName: 8.14.13 atiogl_a (screen 0)
libGL: OpenDriver: trying /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so
libGL error: dlopen /usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so failed (/usr/X11R6/lib64/modules/dri/atiogl_a_dri.so: cannot open shared object file: No such file or directory)
libGL error: unable to find driver: atiogl_a_dri.so
display: :0.0 screen: 0
OpenGL vendor string: Mesa project: www.mesa3d.org
OpenGL renderer string: Mesa GLX Indirect
OpenGL version string: 1.2 (1.5 Mesa 6.2.1)

Doing a search on goodle for atiogl_a_dri.so draws a complete blank.
