Why do gentoo still use ifconfig in /etc/init.d/net.eth0 script instead of using the new "ip" tools to configure interfaces, routes and so on??
I thought ifconfig was deprecated since kernel 2.4 ? |

I'd estimate the chances of ifconfig being dropped from Linux or any Unix about the same as /usr/sbin/sendmail going away. I did notice that the iproute package is not installed by default. I can't seem to find any other Linux distro that installs it by default much less actually uses it... do you know of one?

The later versions of redhat linux use ip for there startup scripts etc. The still provide ifconfig as this is a tool that most users/administrators are "used to".
It's really just a comfort thing... |
