I am new to Alpha servers - but thought I would try one.

I have an Alpha 4000 with 2 each DEC21140-AA network cards running the Sarge installation. After working through the PCI graphics issue by adding the BusID "PCI:0:2:0" to the XF86Config-4 for X to start. I have now found that I have no network connections after X initializes. I cannot even ping my router.

The network tools shows the card with an incorrect submet. IP 192.168.0.10 subnet 0.2.0.0 - noted after several trys to run a package manager to add more software.

After dropping into a terminal the ifconfig is correct with IP 192.168.0.10 subnet 255.255.255.0

If GDM is disabled and as long as X is not initiated base-config will reconfigure apt and load any of those packages. No problems with networking.

What/where does X change any network settings?:?

Thanks
Billy

Sarge?? apt?? base-config??

Umm..... *looks up*.... yep... that says Gentoo.

I think you're a little lost; try here. ;-)

:?: Now I'm really confused. The Gentoo disk I downloaded for Alpha is sarge. Does Gentoo have a different flavor?

Sounds like the same as the original MIPS install media -- we ripped off the Debian images too ;-)
You should be able to boot up off the disk, then once in to debootstrap, select "Drop to a shell" from the menu. From there you should be able to perform the install as if you were booted off a Gentoo LiveCD. :-)
