Hi,
I want to install gentoo on my P4 machine, and I want to have the linux26-headers instead of the linux-headers (to be able to use hal, dbus etc. etc. among other things). I read that with 2005.0, Gentoo switches to a default linux2.6-kernel usage. Does that mean that in the bootstrapping process in 2005.0 the linux26-headers are used? This would also mean that stage2&3 use the 2.6 headers in 2005.0, right? And, if that is true, does this work in the experimental release? Or should I wait for the final 2005.0 release? |

It's going to be very soon, I can feel it.
If I were you, I'd wait a little more. It is, of course, completely up to you.

So? I'm using 2004.3 and I'm installing with gcc3.4.3, udev, linux26-headers, nptl, et cetera. |

The thing is: I want to avoid redundant installation procedures in order to get the linux26-headers installed. The best way would be a linux26-using bootstrap. The only other one I can think of is to install with stage3 and rebuild everything manually. |

I believe the hold up is about a few minor problems with 2005.0 so it should be official any day now... If you can wait, wait; otherwise, go with 2004.3!

getting linux26-headers has nothing whatsoever to do with redundant installation procedures. _________________ .

Well, I have to install a linux-headers based system to be able to rebuild the base toolchain for 26-header usage.
Better: start with a 26-header-system. No need to rebuild the toolchain. |

You can safely bootstrap with "nptl" use flag even on 2004.3 profile & stage. Bootstrap script will automaticaly choose linux26-headers. |

no, you don't.
1. as mentioned in the previous post, you can bootstrap into a 26 header system.
2. you can use the older installation media like 2004.2 that contains joint headers. _________________ .

I just downloaded 2005.0 and am about to install with it on my secondary system. For some reason the full livecd vanished as I was downloading, but I have the minimal one so plan to take it from there. |

Doesn't work.
I included nptl in the USE flags, and it correctly selects the linux26-headers.
But it selects the linux-headers TOO!
Obviously, the latter blocks the former. An "emerge -C" does not work because the linux-headers are NOT installed.
Right now I'm in front of a system that needs to be bootstrapped (I'm starting from stage1). Any ideas? |

I would highly recommend you follow Bob P's great guide on installing Stage 1 NPTL on a Stage 3 Tarball. It works great and doesn't suffer from redundent dependencies. |
