I've been using Gentoo off and on during the pre-release days, and steadily since 1.1. I've noticed that from time to time I will do an update world only to wind up having to perform a complete reinstall of the system. Considering that, I'd feel it would be beneficial to expanding the Gentoo user base if we had a Stable Portage and a Pre-release portage. This would allow the "bleeding edgers" to stay up with what's most current, while still providing those less daring to maintain a stable system. _________________ Succumb to natural tendancies, be hateful and boring. |

This is something I think is a good idea. I have not had reisntall yet but it makes sence. Debian has shown that it is a good way to do things. I would like to have stable for my servers and bleeding for my desktop. _________________ Mostly Harmless |

What you ask is in the works, except instead of stable it will be directed toward server which in turn will have great stablility. _________________ This message self destructed a long time ago. |

perhaps I am wrong, but isn't all that would be required to make a "stable/server" gentoo edition would be to have an alternate profile which has a much more conservative package.mask?
if so, good job on good design...gotta love that forthought |

Actually, it's much more than that -- it requires lots and lots of testing to ensure apps work correctly with one another, permissions are set appropriately across all possible combinations of programs (don't want to leave the wrong binary suid root) and basically everything plays nicely together.
There's a reason why Debian Stable only gets updated once an eon or so.
