you should apply the nitro patch on a 2.6.11 kernel, not on a 2.6.11.3 kernel. Nitro updates 2.6.11 to 2.6.11.2 automaticly. Maybe I'll provide soon a patch that updates everything to 2.6.11.3.

This new nitro broke my mouse! I'm using /dev/usbmouse, made only updates with make oldconfig from my working config, and when I load X the mouse won't move. Same thing with gpm.
Here's the relevant xorg.conf:
Code: |
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse0"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
# Option "Device" "/dev/input/mice"
Option "Device" "/dev/usbmouse"
Option "Emulate3Buttons" "no"
Option "Resolution" "1200" # play with this until it works: http://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=158800&highlight=slow+mouse
EndSection |
When I type "modprobe mouse", I just get something like 'Module not found'. Has something changed in the kernel which I haven't yet accounted for, or did the module just not build properly for some reason or another? Otherwise this new nitro seems to kick butt, hopefully I can figure this out! |

Is there anything that could be slowing me down with this kernel? The initial mount of /dev/hda4 (reiser4) is taking longer than usual and I/O in general seems slower than usual. |

I am running this kernel and the new splashutils but fbsplash/gensplash just won't show up until partway into the boot process and then it complains it can't find a font O_o. Anyone else having the same problem?
Thanks,

Actually, I think it's a great idea given the amount of hatred that some people on the forums bear nitro-sources. With this move, they can no longer claim that we have any real association with gentoo other than the fact that we're on the insane part of the forums.
As for finding threads, you could always just find all of my posts; I have a habit of posting in nitro threads, so you'll be sure to find them that way . _________________ There is no substitute for experience.

Actually, I went further... I created /var/cache/splash But that still didn't do squat... were we supposed to install a previous version beforehand? :S |

Don't worry about them, I read some of those posts and its pure fanboy nonsense. As you can see I joined the gentoo community awhile ago but I dropped out of linux life for a couple years with school and all. But back then I tried to keep up to date with the kernel hacking scene and it was a pain (somewhat fun tho) I'd read through the kernel mailing lists, doing patches, etc etc, so I know the work involved. I'm sure it's even more hectic now. You guys provide a great service to those who want to be on the bleeding edge of things but necessarily dont have the time. You keep doing your thing and let the fanboys flame themselves to death. |

I can't get gensplash to work with this newest one (worked with 2.6.11-rc4-nitro1, though). I used the genkernel script (so sue me--but at least I took out most of the extra crap I don't need. I just like a single script that makes the initrd and stuff instead of having to use make) with --gensplash=emergence, and my grub.conf file says "splash=verbose, theme:emergence", but it still loads the plain black framebuffer. I also noticed with 2.6.11-rc4-nitro1 that if I tried "silent" the colors got garbled instead of showing the progressbar, but would fix themselves after the system finished booting. Anyone know how to help me here? _________________ Knowledge is power.

To get gensplash working again, you need the newest splashutils (1.1.9.1 as mentioned before. Then you need to do 3 things:
1.) create /var/cache/splash/tmp/
2.) You have to recreate your splashimage again. e.g. if you use the default emergence theme and want 1280x1024 resolution, do:
Code: | splash_geninitramfs -v -g /boot/fbsplash-emergence-1280x1024 -r 1280x1024 emergence |
3.) As pointed out when emerging the splashutils, you have to make some modifications to your grub.conf(or lilo.conf if you use LILO), after that it should look like this:
splashutils-1.1.9.1.ebuild wrote: | splash=silent,fadein,tty:8,theme:emergence quiet CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 |
Note the CONSOLE=/dev/tty1 at the end of the line, if you want to see something on console1 you need this option!!!
Hope this helps you to get your gensplash back. Only thing i don't know about is the fadein-option, as i cannot see anything fading in... Anyway, at least it's back again!

OK, I still get:
Code: |
Couldn't load font file
Couldn't load 26pt font from (null)
|
That shows up after mounting / rw. After that message the splash starts in silent mode (but the console still remains normal framebuffer -no splash). Towards the end of the boot process I ge another cannot load font message and the consoles are converted to fbsplash (cuz I added rc-update add fbsplash default - maybe it was splash).
So.. What's up with this one?
Otherwise, nitro is rock solid and fast... Is the cfq scheduler any better than the anticipatory for desktop usage?
Thanks,
Alex. |
