When looking in /usr/portage/sys-kernel/gentoo-sources, I see a version 2.4.20-r1. Is this one newer than 2.4.19-r10, which Portage downloads by default? Cuz that's the one I am using now. It looked like there are more options etc.
Gotta make sure I have the newest. God forbid I stay with old/stable software. Especially since I am not exactly a Linux guru.
THanks

If you have no reason to upgrade your kernel I suggest you stay with the one you have.
On the other hand rebuilding your kernel is fun.
2.4.20 is indeed newer than 2.4.19, the reason you can't download it yet is because it is marked unstable. That doesn't neccessarily mean it is broken it just means that it hasn't been tested by enough people to be marked stable. If you want to try it:
Code: | # emerge rsync
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge -p gentoo-sources
# ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge gentoo-sources |
Assuming your machine is an x86 this will allow you to download this 'untested' kernel. If you want to always have the latest bleeding edge stuff you can change ACCEPT_KEYWORDS in make.conf.
All the best,

I already got it and compiled it and it seems to work as well as 2.4.19 r10. I just wanted to doublecheck.
Thanks!
