|
|
I'm pretty new to this desktop stuff for linux, and in my adventure using Gentoo I found myself searching the forums and other web pages for my answer. Most Open Source projects have a separate documentation project, a one stop place for all answers.
I would be willing to setup and host the a Gentoo Documentation portal. What I need to know from the Gentoo community is your...
1.) Feedback on such an endeavor
2.) Volunteers to help keep the docs updated (This is more than a one person job and will have to have the comunity to help)
I have a system/portal that will work for such a project already that I know would be perfect for this. And having a system like this will also take some of the load off the developers of Gentoo and let them consentrate on developing and not documentation. |

didn't you notice the gentoo docs on the left menu (scroll down a bit). i dunno bout you, but those look like the beginnings of a supposed "gdp". _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

I think Gentoo could benefit from a M$ knowledge base style setup; sort of a cross between fully-indexed documentation, support ticketing system, and FAQ-o-matic. People could ask questions, report problems, and search for answers all in one spot. (It could be made into a bug tracking system, too.) This would be a complicated project to undertake, but would be worthwhile.
Or, at least, we need a search feature for the Gentoo docs |

Just read all the docs. It doesn't take long, really.
A gdp sounds like a good idea. Not sure what the developers would think of this. I would think developer docs are the best since they know exactly what they're dealing with.
Who would take care of building docs with this gdp system? |

not only do the developers not have the time to implement such a complex M$ style knowledge base/tt system, etc. they wouldnt have the time to run the darn thing. i think what the have now is more than sufficient
keep up the good work, guys!

there is a gentoo documentation team. If you want to help, you are definitely invited. The tools we currently use are xml, bugzilla and irc and a mailing list.
Read the xml guide under developer docs, and contact me:
meekrob_AT_gentoo.org
Also feel free to join us at #gentoo-doc on openprojects.
