|
|
Hi all,
I currently have the following machines: Sun SparcStation 20 with a 20inch Sun monitor and a Sun Netra T1125 (no keyb, no mouse, no videocard). I want to be able to connect via X on the SS 20 to the Sun Netra T1125 because the SS 20 is getting kinda slow for working comfortably under X.
Does anybody here have any pointers to good docs etc on how to set this up? Is this even possible without a videocard on the Netra?
Thanks in advace! |

Not having vid on the netra shouldnt be an issue, but you wont be using the "startx" script ...
I dont know the details, but dont exactly what you are talking about was one of the original "points" of X back in the 80s...
Im sure you can modify the startx script on the ss20 to point to the netra. As for starting the server on the netra, I'm really not sure where to start... ? _________________ -Tim Smith |

Ok, I got it so setup right now that I can connect from my SS 20 to the Netra T1125 via X, but I get a very ugly window manager. How can I set it up so that for instance gnome or fluxbox starts automatically?
I would like to get it the same as when you type startx on the commandline and you get a nice fluxbox or gnome desktop... |

Use gdm on the netra and set it up for broadcast only in /etc/X11/gdm.conf -> DisallowTCP = false and under [xdmcp] Enable=true.
Remember to choose it in /etc/rc.conf as your session manager, start it thru /etc/init.d/xdm start.
On the stations (ss20) just X -query.
That should be it. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

Hi gust4voz,
Well, I can connect to the Netra, but I nothing is displayd, I saw the cursor and a checkered pattern on my screen, that's all...
When I try and stop or start xdm I get the following:
beast root # /etc/init.d/xdm start
* WARNING: "xdm" has already been started.
beast root # /etc/init.d/xdm stop
Couldnt get a file descriptor referring to the console
* Stopping ...
* Error stopping . [ !! ]
Any ideas? |

I got it running now. I made a typo somewhere... Thanks for the help!
I have few additional questions:
1. What should I change so that the SS20 automatically starts X on bootup and connect to the Netra (No login, just the graphical login prompt)?
2. To secure this setup, filter port 177 via iptables on the Netra and filter port 6000 on the SparcStation20? Is there something else I can do here? |

To start up the session automatically you can just add the X -query line in /etc/conf.d/local.start
If it's on your local (secure) network you shouldn't care much about filtering, since 177 is just the XDMCP session initiatior port -> you need a user & password to do anything useful other than getting the login banner from gdm.
On the station side if you're paranoid you could filter port 6000 to only be available against the netra. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias

XDMCP thru SSH? I don't think so.
You could use something like openvpn though, that would be simpler and nicer i think.
You can do plain X thru SSH, but you'll have to manually set up the scripts to start the session, kinda get the tunnel up, then run an X server and get gnome-session (or kde or whatever wm you'd like) running. _________________ Gustavo Zacarias
