I was able to install Gentoo but for some reason /proc directory was never created on my root. Therefore gentoo couldn't mount the /proc directory and failed. I did a mkdir /proc and was able to boot.
My question is...being fairly new too linux ( I know this is trivial for some of you but...) What is /proc used for and what is suppose to be in it??
Did I do bad by simply creating a directory called proc? Seems to be working though.
Thanks,

Your /etc/fstab tells the startup scripts what filesystems to mount where, and mounting partitions requires a "mount point", i.e. an empty directory that said filesystem can attach to. "proc", as a filesystem, needs a mount point (/proc), so by creating the directory you did the right thing. |
