ive been unable to find anything that would cause this, so I figured I would go ahead and start a new thread to annoy everyone with..
ok so, i recently added a user to my box, but he's unable to change his password. i can change it as root though. so i checked my user and now i am unable to change it unless done as root as well..
here's what shows up in syslog:
Quote: |
Feb 24 00:17:20 fire passwd(pam_unix)[19146]: authentication failure; logname=knalb uid=1000 euid=0 tty= ruser= rhost= user=knalb
|
here is my pam conf for passwd:
Quote: |
#%PAM-1.0
auth required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
account required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
password required /lib/security/pam_stack.so service=system-auth
|
and here is the error im getting:
Quote: |
knalb@fire knalb $ passwd
Changing password for knalb
(current) UNIX password:
passwd: Authentication token manipulation error
knalb@fire knalb $
|
ive reemerged pam just on the outside chance that was it, nope.. i have no extra characters in my passwd or shadow, and no line breaks.. so any ideas where i look next?

Hello,
just to be sure: when changing your password as a user,
you have to give the OLD (current) password first. After that
you might input the new one
Your output looks like you have started the passwd command
as a user and then typed in the "new" password first and not
the old one...
best regards

haha.. that im not sure of yet.. there were a few things that i changed before trying again ( bad idea ). so im not sure what fixed it... the only thing i can think of that would really have an effect on it was removing some of the users that i had added a while ago, that no longer needed to be there..
i dont really see how that would effect it as the passwd and shadow appeared to be in sync, but hey.. a guru i am not |
