you might have more luck with rc4. Sorenson quicktime is a new addition to mplayer and is more likely to work in the newest version. Also make sure that you have quicktime in your USE when you emerge mplayer.

why oh why does apple not port quicktime to linux? we should ask them kindly to do so, and if they refuse we can castrate them

Please keep on topic. If you want to discuss Apple policy for QuickTime, please post a new thread on "Off the Wall".

Just to keep on topic, I used to have seg faults when playing quicktime until I changed my kernel configuration for the memory (I think it was CONFIG_3GB=true)

I installed mplayer_rc4 using a very basic eBuild that wrote and I also put these codecs in /usr/lib/win32: http://ftp.lug.udel.edu/MPlayer/releases/codecs/qt6dlls.tar.bz2

All svq3 video works great.

was there something wrong with the ebuild that's already in the portage tree?

The lates win32codecs ebuild has been updated with qt6dlls.

Since I emerged mplayer rc4 and win32codecs all the quicktime trailers from apple.com work great.

I'll try the qt6dlls when I get back to work in the morning. As for rc4 to be inte portage tree I don't see it. I synced portage and still only saw rc2 which I have installed. I also tried installing from cvs that didn't work either...

As I said, I'll let you know in the morning :)

rc4 is in the portage tree, but it is not marked as stable yet. To emerge rc4, do:
Code:
ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge mplayer

Hm... rc4 depends on xvid and so tries to download xvidcore-0.9.1.tar.bz2 but it's not on any mirrors or even ibiblio, and files.xvid.org doesn't even reply to a pung, let alone a downloadrequest...

Anybody happen to have that file and are willing to share it?

Actually, rc4 depends on xvidcore-0.9.0.tar.bz2. When you emerged rc4 using the '~x86' keyword, you also unmasked xvidcore-0.9.1.tar.bz2. Consequently, portage was trying to emerge that version, which is not available as you noted Once the emerge fails just 'emerge xvid'. This will use xvdicore-0.9.0. Then 'ACCEPT_KEYWORDS=~x86 emerge mplayer'.

Ok, so I emerged xvid, I emerged mplayer rc4, I unpacked qtdlls into /usr/lib/win32/ and I played the two towers... didn't work...

Now what do I try?
MPG doesn't work either... no video. It just turns into a sluggish green.

maybe try a different video out method. How about
Code:
mplayer -vo x11 trialer.mov

If this works then it's likely to be a problem with your graphics drivers and their support of xv.

Now I get picture too, and good sound, but the screen ain't zooming. I can see TTT trailer in 2x4cm... what setting do I have to use to get it to get bigger... fullscreen just turns my screen black around the miniature video...

ok, I think the easiest way to do that would be to get xv working, what drivers are you using for your graphics card and what graphics card are you using for that matter?

OK, I have no experience with that chipset and cannot tell you if the XVideo extension is supported. Have a look at /var/log/XFree86.0.log and search for XVideo, does the extension load ok? If not maybe try playing around with some of the driver options, they are listed in the trident man page. There may also be alternative drivers available for this chipset, I just don't know I'm afraid so have a search and see what you can find.

The reason that fullscreen does not work with vo x11 is that driver does not support hardware scaling, to enable software scaling use -zoom parameter (this can be fine tuned with -sws options, read mplayer man page for more details). Note that this will have a big hit on performance if displayed in fullscreen.

hope some of that helps,
Herbie.

I checked the log and it loaded ok.

-zoom did ave a huge impact on performance :P
Couldn't watch... to horrible...

I don't see what options would work playing around with though. Most are for Cyber-cards which I don't have...

Options:
Code:
CONFIGURATION DETAILS
Please refer to XF86Config(5x) for general configuration details.  This
section only covers configuration details specific to this driver.

The following driver Options are supported:

       Option "SWCursor" "boolean"
Enable or disable the SW cursor.  Default: off.

       Option "NoAccel" "boolean"
Disable   or  enable  acceleration.   Default:  acceleration  is

       Option "CyberShadow" "boolean"
For Cyber chipsets only, turn off shadow registers. If you  only
see a partial display - this may be the option for you. Default:
              on.

       Option "CyberStretch" "boolean"
For Cyber chipsets only, turn on stretching. When the resolution
is  lower  than  the  LCD's screen, this option will stretch the
graphics mode to fill the entire LCD. Default: off.

       Option "ShadowFB" "boolean"
Enable or disable use of the shadow framebuffer layer.  Default:
              off.

       Option "VideoKey" "integer"
This sets the default pixel value for the YUV video overlay key.
              Default: undefined.

       Option "NoPciBurst" "boolean"
Turn off  PCI  burst  mode,  PCI  Bursting  is  on  by  default.
              Default: off.

       Option "XvHsync" "integer"
Override the default Horizontal-sync value for the Xv extension.
This is used to center the Xv image on the screen.   By  default
the values are assigned based on the video card.  Default: 0.

       Option "XvVsync" "integer"
Override  the  default Vertical-sync value for the Xv extension.
This is used to center the Xv image on the screen.   By  default
the values are assigned based on the video card.  Default: 0.

       Option "XvBskew" "integer"
Override  the  default  Bottom  skew value for the Xv extension.
This is used to extend the Xv image on the screen at the bottom.
By  default  the  values  are  assigned based on the video card.
              Default: 0.

       Option "XvRskew" "integer"
Override the default Right skew  value  for  the  Xv  extension.
This  is used to extend the Xv image on the screen at the right.
By default the values are assigned  based  on  the  video  card.
              Default: 0.

       Option "Display" "string"
Override  the  display.   Possible  values  are "CRT", "LCD" and

Default: Use display active when X started.

       Option "Display1400" "boolean"
Inform   driver   to  expect  1400x1050  display  instead  of  a
              1280x1024.  Default: off.

       Option "GammaBrightness" "string"
Set display gamma value  and  brightness.  "string"  is  "gamma,
brightness",  where gamma is a floating point value greater than
0 and less or equal  to  10.  brightness  is  an  integer  value
greater  or  equal  to  0 and less than 128.  Default: gamma and
brightness control is turned off.  Note: This is  not  supported
              on all chipsets.

A search on alternative drivers yealded one result, an official svga driver from Trident, but I didn't find "Trident Blade 2D/3D" so I had to choose Trident 3D... will try and see what happens...

Just a thought, what screen depth are you running at? if running at depth 24, try switching to depth 16. (change this in screen section of XF86Config)

Just a thought, what screen depth are you running at? if running at depth 24, try switching to depth 16. (change this in screen section of XF86Config)

I am usuing a GeForce 2 running at 1280x1024 with a 24 bit depth. Is colordepth 16 required? (I am emerging to test this now).
