Hi,

I have to install linux on a hp omnibook xe4500. However, when I boot the install CD (I tried 1.4-rc2 as well as a SuSE 8.1) I get error messages like this:

Quote:

hda: status error: status=0x58 { DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest }
hda: drive not ready for command

...

hda: lost interrupt

After some netsearching it seems that this is the result of the buggy ali15x3 chipset and/or driver. One should use the generic IDE interface, and disable ali15x3 support in (not to compile it into) the kernel.

I understand this. But this driver seems to be compiled into the different install kernels, which makes them unusable for me.

My question is: Is there a boot parameter that I can pass to the kernel to disable a specific IDE chipset support? Or is there anyone out there with this notebook who had this problem, and how (s)he solved it?

(I know, I could a make a new install CD with a custom kernel, but I don't really want to do that.)

Thanks for any help:

A quick googling suggests that you should try adding 'idebus=50' to your boot line.

good luck

Try adding ide=nodma to the kernel boot parameter list, then use a nice new kernel (I've tried 2.4.21-pre4-ac4) which seems to work quite well...
