Everything else worked out flawlessly, but some packages do not want to compile here, with similar errors.
Please have a look at the following three packages:

1. kde-base/kdemultimedia-kfile-plugins-3.4.0_rc1:
Code:

These problems have nothing to do with CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS/LDFLAGS, I already tried a minimal & save set of flags, but the errors stay the same.

Anyone any idea, what the problem could be?

Right now KDE 3.4.0 RC1 and both betas are masked. Give it a week and resync it and it should work. There's still some Gentoo specific bugs in it.

I know, but others seem not to have experienced these problems. I am still searching for a better solution than to wait.

I assume it has something to do with installed libs. I already re-emerged kdelibs, imlib, imlib2, and libtool, but that didn't change anything.

The weird thing is, I could not find any info on a similar problem at all in this forum (nor in bugs.gentoo.org and bugs.kde.org).

At the moment, I am pretty lost here, because this way I am unable to emerge

A shot in the dark. About the first problem it seems to me that you are missing Taglib. Have you emerged it?
The other two problems look like they are due to a broken library. What version of gcc do you have?
Maybe, you need to open a bug report in KDE

I know Gentoo is all about being cutting-edge and all, but give it a few days before you go head first into a brick wall trying to get things that don't work yet working.

taglib-1.3.1 is installed, I just re-emerged it, but no change.

gcc-3.4.3-20050110

I am still in the hope, to find the solution for this problem, to be able to continue the emerging. Since the error output does not show, what the problem could be (at least I can not see anything familiar in it), it would be pretty hard to file a bug.

It would be no problem for me, to wait, if others encounter the same problems like me, so if it would be a known bug, but since there is noone else reporting anything concerning this matter, it would not make sense to sit back and wait for something, that's not going to happen by itself...

I think that the problems are related to the gcc. Take a look at this bug report http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=80143
I searched the KDE bug database for gcc and all the reports that I found are related to gcc 3.4.*

The sad thing is that I want to emerge gcc 3.4.3 :x

There are still a few RC1 ebuilds completely missing from Portage (kde-base/kode is the one I've been waiting on the past 24 hours.)

While this is the case, I wouldn't put very high hopes on all the myriad of other ebuilds compiling cleanly.

I'm unable to emerge kdegraphics, kdemultimedia and kdeaddons. My kdepim, however, installed just fine. Same errors as you get, no clue as to what the problem is. Going to switch GCC versions later and see if that helps.

*switching GCC didn't help.

The problem is you use -fvisibility-inlines-hidden -fvisibility=hidden options to built these packages.
some packages in kde 3.4 rc1, can't be built with these options, anyway you can built arts, kdelibs, kdebase with these options.

That came also to my mind, but I am not quite sure, how I can test, if it is gcc-3.4.3, that's causing those troubles with about 18 KDE3.4.0_rc1 packages (I am already through with compiling, I just used "emerge --resume --skipfirst" on every failure, so it's about 18 packages remaining, that I can not compile either due to compile-failure, or because the next package was depending on the previously failed one).

I really need gcc-3.4.3, because it's an IBM ThinkPad T42p with Pentium-M processor, and I really don't want to miss the possibility to use the "-march=pentium-m" flag.

Because gcc gets installed slotted, I am just upgrading 3.3.4 to 3.3.5-r1, and then I'll try to switch from 3.4.3 to 3.3.5 and restart the emerge of the missing packages (at least, that's the only thing that's left to try, I think).

I really do not think, that the mentioned problems are related to missing packages. Either version (beta2 / rc_1) simply has to compile, I also don't think, that it's about missing libs, so there is no reason to stick with that theory. In this case, waiting will not solve the problem.

What versions of gcc did you switch, and which versions do you have installed?

As already mentioned in my initial post, it's not a matter of flags. Of course I also tried those failing packages with a minimal and save stack of flags, but it lead to the exact same error.

BTW It's not only arts, kdelibs, kdebase, which deal well with "-fvisibility-inlines-hidden -fvisibility=hidden". None of the packages had problems with "fvisibility-inlines-hidden" at all, and only very few didn't like "-fvisibility=hidden".

Have you tried re-compiling the toolchain with saner flags, then compiling KDE with the "saner" toolchain?

This is because of comments you wrote in the NPTL stage 1-on-3 support thread.

No, didn't get that far. I already thought about the used "bleeding edge" flags, but it's really quite strange, because everthing else on that machine compiled just fine, except those ~ 18 KDE3.4.0_rc1 packages, which all are sort of "media" related.

What about your installation? Didn't you also use the full set of stacked flags for your installation? Did you already try to emerge KDE3.4.0_rc1?

I really like the used flags-selection, so I really would like to keep it, if possible.

For trying some "saner" flags on the KDE packages: Do you really think, it is necessary to recompile the whole toolkit? I mean, shouldn't it be enough, to just recompile gcc? Because recompiling the whole toolkit would not speek for the easy switching-possibility of the gcc-version to use with gcc-config.

Hey, I just have to jump into this thread as well; I have the same problem. I have also compiled my base system rather "edgy" (i.e. with the additional C#-flags)...

I'm still searching for more info on that issue. Until now, noone could confirm, that it's not possible to compile KDE3.4.0_rc1 with gcc-3.4.3-20050110, so I am still unsure, if it is my compile-flags-selection, or simply gcc-3.4.3-20050110 itself.

If it's 3.4.3-20050110 itself, causing those troubles (or the other way: if it's KDE3.4.0_rc1 causing those troubles with gcc-3.4.3-20050110), shouldn't it be possible, to switch to 3.3.5-r1 or 3.3.4 (just using gcc-config, to whatever version else is installed on your system), and to compile the remaining ~18 packages with that compiler-version?

I just recompiled the toolchain with really plain flags, and am now emerging kdemultimedia. I'll post back when that's done. Have you tried fix_libtool_files.sh? When I ran that after the re-emerge, I came to think that I might have missed out on that last time...

Sounds like this would be very possible, but it doesn't feel koscher at all...

Recompiled with my normal flags. Failed again, but this time with a slightly different error, I think (can't really compare since I couldn't save the old error-message). Anyway, I'm compiling again with easy flags... I'll get back...

ah, sorry... don't have it anymore... but I'm compiling kdemultimedia again, this time with really plain use-flags. It's been going on for a while now, so it might be going all the way. If it fails, I'll make sure to post the emerge info... (I emerged in console, so I couldn't easily copy&paste)...

Hey! It just finnished and it compiled fine! (To bad there are no optimizations though...)
How is it going for you other guys?

Really plain USE-flags? Sorry, but I don't understand, what do USE-flags have to do with compile problems?

And the last time I tried, it made really no difference at all which CFLAGS/CXXFLAGS/LDFLAGS I used for compiling the trouble-makeing-KDE-package, what's why I thought, it can only be a problem with gcc itself, or the compile-flags gcc got compiled with.
