DISCLAIMER:
This patchset is not an official linux-kernel-branch. Anyone using it does so at their own risk. Neither the patchset-maintainers (ie anyone from the NITRO-DEV team which is currently comprised of Darckness, Tiger683, and seppe) nor any of the authors of the patches included herein can be held responsible for any sort of damage caused by this software.

Check page 8 for the experimental release.
It actually includes many fixes, and sk98lin should work perfectly on it.

REALTIME:
We recently had a talk with Con Kolivas, our idol and the creator of ck sources. He recommended that we scrap the rt kernel (you can see his exact quotes when I get the irc logs up). We saw His logic immediately, and have discontinued the rt version. That is not to say that there will not be any more experimental versions, because there will. Tiger683 is working on it right now. The quote that I'll post here from Con is as follows:
Con Kolivas wrote:

Hi

While I applaud your effort I'm sorry to say that I don't think most of your
users will ever derive benefit from the hard real time aspect of the rt
patches. If your target audience is to be the hard core audio usage
(professional audio and musicians) and not the desktop audio enthusiast or
even the audiophile, then realtime preempt is the way to go. The "lighter"
levels of low latency in preempt, preempt the BKL and voluntary preempt will
benefit a desktop without any noticeable performance impact. The hard real
time preempt, however, will not cause noticeable benefit for a desktop yet
will impact performance in a detrimental way. Furthermore they are still in
development and instability in your patchset is inevitable if you start
including it.

Cheers,
Con

Thanks for taking the time to respond so quickly Con!

kexec howto

IT is here!!!
Now that 2.6.11 has come around, I can release IT. Basically, we figured that a lot of the posts in this thread are the result of people having issues with either ati or nvidia binary drivers. So what did we do? Something insane. Something that only a true IND (Insane Nitro-Dev) would do. We put them in the kernel. Thanks to my Makefile hacking, Tiger683's Kconfig hacking, and predatorfreak for inspiration and initial Kconfig ideas, and a LOT of testing from everyone, it worked out.
So what does this mean for you?
It means that you no longer have to do 'emerge nvidia-kernel' or 'emerge ati-drivers' with each release! Just go to Device Drivers->Accelerated graphics drivers and select your driver. They both require you to accept the appropriate license which can be found on the manufacturer's web site, and then the driver is enabled. Ati drivers require in-kernel agpgart to be enabled in order to compile, and nvidia drivers do not. All necessary patches are applied, and they both build and work perfectly. We'll be keeping this up-to-date from now on so that nitro users will never need to worry about kernel compatibility with these drivers. Unless, of course, someone discovers some sort of major problem that forces us to discontinue this. We hope that doesn't happen since it's really just helpful to everyone. If you doubt that, check the forums now and see how many threads/posts you can find with people who can't get their drivers to work with 2.6.11.
NOTE: I know SOMEBODY is going to think they're craftier than everyone else and try to get the drivers to build INTO the kernel instead of as modules. I will say here and now that you are wasting your time. It won't work. Just use it like everyone else.

LuFS: This is probably the last version that we'll have it in because it's pretty dead. Tiger683 is writing a howto for fuse/lufis that will be posted soon. Switch to that or patch it yourself.

sk98lin: I heard a rumor that it is broken. Might be, might not be. If it is, I'll fix it. If it isn't, I'll leave it alone

Software suspend with this version is 50/50. It will either work because of some last-minute hackery that I attempted, or it won't. The devs on this project decided that they were too good to follow the standard rules for functions, and I had to clean up a bit. Plus, there's no version out for 2.6.11 yet so I had to port this. ;)

Reiser4 people: The slowdown/bugs from previous versions should be fixed.

Insane stack users: Here is basically how it works (unless I'm completely mistaken). The smaller the stack size, the less memory stuff will use. The larger the stack size, the more memory it will use AND the faster stuff will work (to an extent I suppose). I'm not sure how noticible it would be and I'm sticking to 4k stacks myself. No guarantees that everything will work with stack sizes other than 4k and 8k!

SEMI-NEW:
This kernel bears the "Darckness Gaming Seal Of Approval". This means that it's a kernel that I can play World of Warcraft and other intense games without issues on. Of course I test it for other stuff as well, but I remember always being frustrated when I couldn't find a good fps-guaranteed kernel. From now on, I will put the seal of approval on any nitros that I deem worthy of my use in various gaming worlds. For those of you wondering why I think I'm qualified to have my own Seal Of Approval, check out my awesome World Of Warcraft Howto or Warcraft III & TFT Howto.

Teamspeak DOES run.

Old:
I think that about covers everything regarding this release...

For a cool automotive background picture made by M@rijn, go here.

For a Gentoo-related background by pifactorial, go here (1920x1200) or here (non-seppe size)

For an awesome "chipset-based" background by hermes_jr that I'm currently using, check here (1280x1024)

Updated install directions for nitro-sources courtesy of BlinkEye:
BlinkEye wrote:
1. download the ebuild
2. open /etc/make.conf and make sure you've set "PORTDIR_OVERLAY=/usr/local/portage" (without the quotes. you may specify another path)
3. source /etc/make.conf
4. mkdir -p $PORTDIR_OVERLAY/sys-kernel/nitro-sources
5. mv the ebuild to $PORTDIR_OVERLAY/sys-kernel/nitro-sources
6. open /etc/portage/package.keywords (if it doesn't exist create it)
7. add "sys-kernel/nitro-sources ~x86" (without the quotes and with the appropriate architecture - for me its ~x86")
8. emerge nitro-sources -pv
9. keep in mind the desired useflags
10. USE="symlink" emerge --digest nitro-sources (add to USE="..." any desired useflag)
11. cd /usr/src/ and behold your nitro-sources
13. remerge any modules that aren't in the kernel

Thanks BlinkEye!
--digest flag suggested by thecrazyperson_ws.

More cool documentation/howto stuff appreciated!

Also be sure to check out my ideas on genkernel. Anyone who can contribute to realizing some of the ideas in that thread would be most appreciated.

EDIT: Fixed a quote.

Extra:
As for the NDF (nitro-dev files), I'll be updating them gradually now. Then you'll see why development has been a tad slow lately, and why I couldn't update them sooner.

STOP POSTING SUPPORT THREADS OUTSIDE THIS ONE!!!
I ONLY GIVE SUPPORT HELP IN THE APPROPRIATE NITRO THREADS.
THANK YOU FOR YOUR CONSIDERATION TOWARDS THE GENTOO FORUMS.

Is this even legal? My understand was they the proprietary drivers distribute module sources _seperately_ because you legally cannot distribute them alongside the mainline GPL'd kernel sources due to their proprietary nature. Hmmmm....

So long as you accept the license and you acklage that there NOT part of the mainline kernel its legal (as far as i know).

@ codergeek42
The purpose of this all is to make the users' lifes easier!
Disclaimer says that these sources are addon for the kernel and dont pose an ASSIMILATION of the patches.
To compile the modules you first have to accept the original nvidia and/or ati licence in Kconfig.

What's the matter with you ppl ? Why do you have to ruin everything ? The INDs have put a lot of effort into this and it's cool to have the drivers into the kernel. I don't give a f*** on the license so it's ok by me.

Anyway I hope this patch works on Reiser4.

Hey folks!

Calm down. Everyone.
Yes i know the flame from the last netro post. A result of a mistake by the nitro devs and an over-react from others.
But Codergeek just did an remark of possible license conflicts. Theres no need of a new flamewar about.
So keep objective.

Sorry, I´m not an english native speaker, so don´t blame me. But I think you know what I mean with this post.

Greetings,
Lupo

There´s no question about the work on this by the devs. But the license IS important.

Believe me, its all fine, reviewed the nvidia and/or ati licence + added appropriate licence
agreements on which the modules depend...

cheers

I am not sure, it might be something with portage and one of those bugs, i dont use gentoo,

could you please try doing all manually (download, patch, configure, make)
just to see if it is it?

And one more thing:
before doing anything, try doing :

Code:

bash $ make mrproper && make distclean

DID you do all manually or just emerge nitro?

if emerge, DO it manually, all of it.... i suppose something on your system is messed
and id like to exclude portage, cuz i dont know much about it.....

They have indeed put a lot of work into these patches and it is appreciated believe me.

However, one does have to be a bit careful of licenses and so on. To say you don't give a f*** about licenses is fine - for you, I am sure you have plently of illegal software. Many people won't give a crap about that, but some will - notably the owners of the code. It only takes one idiot (legally/morally correct or not) to start making a fuss and it could turn messy.

An extreme case is the crap SCO are doing. Let's assume they don't have a case (which, of course, they don't). It has still cost millions of dollars to sort the mess out. A complete restructuring of the kernel patching system and a big headache for the OS community.

I think what the devs here have done is excellent and big kudos from me but blindly putting in propietry code into kernels (and, again, I am not saying they did blindly put the code in) may or may not be legal. I don't know.

However, it is something people should think about very carefully. I hope it is not removed.

But to simply ignore the possiblities and not even think about it or say 'f*** it' is neither mature, responsible nor an attitude to adopt, and, thankfully, one the devs have not adopted. I think they have thought about it carefully.

You should also bear in mind that thousands of people are downloading these patchsets. I host the 2.6.10-rc2, rc3 and rc4 patches for nitro and I am still getting about 30 downloads a day (out of interest, January had 2350 downloads of rc4 and 1032 of rc2, February had 1360 of rc4). It is used by many distributions and has appeared in many forums and indeed newsgroups as a patch to try.

As you can see, it is slightly more than a schoolboy project with an audience consisting of someone's Mum and few friends where one can blithly ignore practicalities.

Think about it.

PS. Great effort guys :D

Thanks.

What you just said is right and i hope people wont misunderstand this. I only can tell,
that there was almost more work put into making the licence questions cleared than into
extending the software itself.
Once more: we didn't change a single line of the original files,
and put very big emphasize on the ORIGINAL licences of the both vendors, so you
are NOT able to build the modules for both ati and nvidia without explicitly accepting the original nvidia /ati licence...

cheers
