I've been running different NIC's with the 8139too chipset, and I've never had any trouble what so ever. 3Com is ofcourse nice as well, but a tad bit expensive _________________ Hmm.. I like the Linksys LNE100TX. Tulip chipset, cheap and rock solid. |

My favorite is intel pro 100. No problems with any OS i tried so far (even works with win98 out of the box).
3-com 905 tx and netgear310 are nice too.
There are probably more expensive good cards, but I never tried them at home. |

I use an Intel Pro 1000/MT
it's an awesome card and will let me use Gigabit later in life.
It floats from $45-55 on newegg.com (where I got mine)
also, this card is 1/2 height of it can fit in low proflie boxes if you take off the bracket (no short hracket is included).
I've not had a problem this card in and windows or in Trustix, Redhat, and Gentoo Distros of Linux.
The Intel 100 adapters are great too.
The 1000/mt while a lot more $ than a netgear (great cheap nic) or linksys nic performs better when doing network benchmarks with somethign like SiSoft's sandra in windows.
It has some hardware TCP functins like the 3com server/workstation NICs do too.
<reads more of your post>if you are connecting just to an ADSL rounter, that's 10baseT connection in most cases so I'd jsut get a netgear or similar card. no sense spending $45 on 1000baseT when you'll only use 1% if it :-> |

I second that. I've been able to use them since Redhad 5.2 (After downloading the driver source)
Plus, you can get them pretty much anywhere. I've even found them at times for only 10 bucks (US).

If you got the money go ahead and get a 3c59x, if you want a cheap card just get the Linksys mentioned above. Used both extensively (as well as the Netgear which uses the same chipset as the Linksys) and they both work great. |

I've used quite a few different cards and I've never had a problem with any of them (well not in the last several years anyways). Unless you want gigabit ethernet I'd just get what's cheap. |
