I just bought a Philips IDE CDRW on ebay because my HP USB burner was slow when ripping CDs (using cdparanoia). The philips isn't any faster. I'm using scsi emulation and the drive is 32X read.

Any ideas?

I suppose DMA is off for your cd burner/reader. This helped me.

I have the following in /etc/conf.d/local.start:

Code:
echo using_dma:1 >> /proc/ide/hdc/settings

cdparanoia is dead slow: I can rip a cd in 3 minutes when I disable cdparanoia (32 speed). When cdparanoia is enabled, speed goes down to 2-speed.

Don't blame the CD burner too soon.

cdda2wav ripps hell of alot faster than cdparanoia for me, and one cd (pixies - doolitle) was only ripable with cdda2wav maximum paranoia with cdparanoia and even minimun always failed.

I browsed around a little and found different models of Philips 32x cd writers with dae speeds ranging from 8x to 30x. Any decent review of the model you have will tell you what the dae speed is.

You should try cdparanoia with "-Z" before making any assumptions about the speed of your drive though.

I'm using an LG GCE-8481B 48x drive and with "Z" I was able to rip a 51 minute pressed audio CD in 2 minutes.
