I'd like to thank developers and other contributers too. Gentoo is smoothest distro I've ever seen - easy to install, conf and maintain.
All hails to portage!
And Gentoo shop has been in my mind for some time. Maybe I'll get an hood and sticker or something:) _________________ psylove |

I'd like to add my thanks too. The only other distros that have ever come close for me are Mandrake and Debian Unstable (although Fedora's coming on well). I can't see any other distro even coming close to Gentoo any time soon. Long may Gentoo rule! _________________ Andy. |

| Oh yea. I know that feeling. On Fedora I had to install Apache, PHP, MySQL, and vsftpd on my own as a local test server. I did that for each (PHP's ./configure was 30 LINES!! THANK YOU for USE flags and doing this automagically for me!!!). (I still, to this day, don't know why they didn't work when I configured them exactly the same using the redhat-config-* tools and doing it manually) That was a major pain at first... _________________ ~~ Peter: Programmer, Mathematician, STEM & Free Software Advocate, Enlightened Agent, Transhumanist, Fedora contributor

I concur.
Many thanks for the distro that got me away from LFS (I couldnt stand any of the others, they seems to remove the whole reason why I used GNU/linux in the first place).
Been using it for about a year now, and its just getting better and better |

I would also like to acknowledge the efforts of the Gentoo developers. It must be a labor of love for those people. I have Gentoo on two of my desktops and on my laptop. If not for work requirements, I would get rid of windows entirely. _________________ Registered Linux User # 121842

Cheers to all,
I just wanted to take a minute and thank any / all people that made Gentoo possible!
I was introduced to it a couple of weeks ago, and being the kind of person who likes a challenge, I lept into it. I had been using RH9 and FC for a while, and while it suited my purposes, I felt I was not learning as much as I could...and FC3 crashed my "server" at home. Anyway, having never compiled a kernel and intrigued at the prospect of learning exactly what goes into a linux installation, I took a shot with Gentoo.
"Manually configuring a kernel is often seen as the most difficult procedure a Linux user ever has to perform. Nothing is less true -- after configuring a couple of kernels you don't even remember that it was difficult " - Gentoo Handbook
How true, how true! I am sitting back at my "finished" product (I quote b/c I feel that a linux install is never finished), and I am wondering how I ever did without this.
So, while I am not exactly a "convert" since I have used linux dists before, I am definitely hooked on this version and will probably never use another! I guess if you can get past the long compile times...which I did, you have an operating system that is made for your computer BY you; and you can make it do whatever you want
I guess I'll stop babbling right now so I don't bore the heck out of all of you - I just wanted to thank everyone for creating something truly unique! Keep up the good work, and I'm sure I'll talk to some of you soon when I have a question!
Regards,
wahman

Gentoo is truely the best Linux Distro available. I have tried many distros over the past several years, and not one has satisfied me like Gentoo. The Gentoo Development Team has truely made an impressive product. Bravo for a job well done. _________________ Spread the Joy, World Year of Physics is here.

Yea, me too.
I hate to admit that I quit Gentoo for almost a year before coming back to it. Gentoo sat quietly on two partitions on my harddrive while I ran Fedora until I got sick of how buggy and unstable that OS is. Two weeks ago I booted back into Gentoo, upgraded to the 2.6 kernel, re-emerged everything and am just astounded at how good an OS this really is. And how far it has progressed in a short time. Really almost everything "just works" even the stuff that had been hard before. Sound, DVDs, CD Burning, USB devices, etc all work without sweat. I don't think that anyone has mentioned the speed of this OS either. I run XP and Fedora on the same system and Genoo is just so much more responsive than either of those. One of these days I'll be out of grad school and will have time to contribute something back but until then I'll just have to say thank you to the Genoo developers. Great stuff. |
