Hi, I'm having some trouble with xorg 6.8.2: it's eating all my memory (1GB!):

...so it's already using about 736MB! And it's getting more and more. Okay, it took 3 days of uptime 'til it got to these 736MB.
I've had the same issue with xorg-x11-6.8.1.901 and 902, but I thought this might be due to the development versions.
Machine's a Ultra10 and gcc version is 3.3.5.20050130.

Any ideas?

I'm running Linux on a SunBlade 100. I too am using x.org, and my it states that my VmSize is 73,416 and my VmRss is 35,736. Are you loading alot of modules maybe? Do you have a ton of font modules etc that you are trying to load? I'm not too sure on what the issue may be unless you have a module that you are loading in X that is not workin correctly.

No idea anyone?
I first thought that it might be caused by some application since I'm using a lot of java stuff on this machine, but even without these applications I have to restart X every 3 or 4 days because of getting short of memory. :(

Hei! I get exactly the same (fail). I get 560Mb out of 883 is being used. How can it eat up all the memory? I am using xorg-x111-6.8.0-r4.
And by the way, it happens when I start X, it does accumulates over time... why?

And another important thing:
I don't think it is xorg who is doing it. I killed X, and checked the memory used using top. from 907M the gentoo is using 670MB! and I don't use and modules. I build into the kernel all I need, and without all the fency staff like bluetooth and wireless, video etc. is it a problem with kernel 2.6.10?

I guess the problem is either Gaim, thunderbird or mozilla. one of the three programs (gtk lib) is leaking memory: at start I have minimal memory use, but activating one of these program uses a lot of memory, and killing it later does not free the memory. I did not find out which one though.

On my list of running applications I have:
- Mozilla Firefox (=> so it might be GTK?)
- KDE (is definetly not the problem)
- xpdf
- some java apps (...with blackdown-jdk-1.4.1)

Without Mozilla the memory usage is remaining the same, so I guess it's blackdown-java.
I'll try it with version 1.4.2.

I'm sure now, that it was one of IBM's java applications.
But since Gentoo/SPARC is not a supported platform, I doubt that they'll give me support for this issue. :(

It is time to do something about this memory use! the excessive usage comes either from Mozilla, or thunderbird (also mozilla). Both are good peograms and I want to keep using them, but have to do something about this memory usage. my memory meter says now 614 out of available 883. ouput from xfree gives :

now, when I run matlab, and overflow the memory until it is full (with a huge variable for example), and then clean it, tadam! the memory meter gets back to 200-300 MB.

So how is it possible to fix this problem? NOTICE: I am talking about x86, not sparc. the problem is in sparc also.

Someone --- nadi? --- just said something very interesting. Do I understand correctly that you are reporting this for mozilla on both sparc and x86? And by the way, mozilla, firefox, and thunderbird are all pretty much the same thing under the hood, but I think it's mozilla and thunderbird that really like java-vm.

By the way, this system (that I am responding on is a sparc U2-SMP, 512MB system with uptime:00:31:08 up 105 days, 19:20, 10 users, load average: 0.16, 0.14, 0.09. I use firefox quite a bit, mozilla & thunderbird never on it, and I haven't noticed any particular memory loss, although X does take quite a bit, and so does firefox. Seems to be constant, though. Thus:

As you see, X has been up quite a while, but its memory requirements haven't changed much. (You have to trust me on this.) An experiment comparing mozilla and firefox, or firefox with and without using thunderbird might be interesting.

update for my case: since upgrading to kernel 2.6 and re-emerging ~80 packages (emerge -eD blackdown-jdk), my java applications are working now and the memory problem is gone.
