Okay. My gentoo linux came installed with GNOME. But personaly I like KDE. I have no clue if KDE works for Gentoo or what. If it does how do I install it. If I install it, can I alternate between GNOME and KDE or no? Also will all my settings aplications be saved? If not, how do I reactivate them? Also can I install KDE from GNOME or do I have to do something else? Thanks!
P.S. please do not redirect me to the KDE official site or anything like that: I've been there, nothing helps.
Thanks in Advance. |

For kde, just run "emerge kde". Takes a while to compile.
What do you mean by settings applications? KDE, as a DE, operates with different settings apart from Gnome. However, programs like Firefox, XMMS, mplayer, and the like (which don't have any direct ties to any DEs), retain their settings since they have a set of global settings in the /etc or their respective directory. |

When I say settings I mean the normal things like my documents, paths, locations, Bookmarks, etc. Maybe I should have been more specific. But before I emerge kde, can I ask you a few questions?
Which in your oppinion is better, Gnome or KDE? Why?
Which is faster?
Which has better features?
Whats the difference/distinguishment between GNOME and KDE?
What makes KDE popular, over GNOME?
Thanks, Shadows. |

Why did you install Gnome then in the first place? Gentoo doesn't come with anything but Gnu/Linux and Portage

It does fine, why wouldn't it be?

We have great manuals, have a look on the documentation page

All personal configuration files are stored in your home directory

By resetting those options

If you want a basic kde system and go on from there, I suggest you just emerge kdebase, it has all the basic kde stuff you need or want.
No problem |

Which in your oppinion is better, Gnome or KDE? Why? KDE, systemwide integration and features.
Which is faster? KDE once leaded.
Which has better features? Depends on what you need, for me it's KDE.
Whats the difference/distinguishment between GNOME and KDE? Try them, it's hard to say quickly.
What makes KDE popular, over GNOME? It's features, maturity and integration. _________________ No one is a virgin, life screws us all. |

Obviously you haven't tried XFCE yet. Best DE out there (if you don't do the xfce4-session thing) and it's based on Gnome, but without the bloat. Just thought I'd put in a shameless plug . |

XFCE is not based on Gnome. It's based on GTK+, but that do not mean it's based on Gnome. I have tried XFCE, but I still prefer KDE. _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |
