Has anyone successfully used XFS when installing Gentoo on an iMac?

XFS is very good, but you should not use it for /boot, as yaboot sometimes fails to load kernels from XFS partitions. So, make an ext2 /boot, and all other partitions can be XFS (that's how I like it).

my pb is running on xfs for several months now without any fs related problem.
And I suggest you to forget about the /boot thingy, afaik its not needed in ppc and therefore im not using it

I have that solved, but for conversations's sake, why do you say it is not needed? Did you learn that from anywhere else than from the Genoot guide? There are many reasons to have separate partitions. Varying filesystems is one of those reasons. Backup partitions is another. So, I guess you could say that a /usr partition is not needed on ppc, or x86, or sparc, etc..., but that's hardly the point, it it? There are all sorts of configurations that are not needed, but where does that leave configurations that are optimal or preferred? If there is a reason why a /boot partition really isn't needed (and I mean, there aren't any reasons for wanting one) then I would love to hear it.

errr .... i didnt told you not to do any partitions, i just said not to use the /boot partiton in ppc, cause i dont think its usefull here. On ppc the bootstrap partition is something similar to the /boot partition, yaboot copies there all it needs to bring up the bootmenu BUT linux doesnt use it at all, its just for the loader afaik.

I have myself /usr and / on different xfs partitions but as you said its all about the needs of the user
