xine and gmplayer seem pretty much the same except that I think that gmplayer can play quicktime movies and xine can't. Xine on the other hand is nicer in my opinion because you can stretch the screen without the aspect ratio getting out of wack (in gmplayer stretching the window stretches the picture without maintaining the aspect ratio). I like Xine's dvd support better too. I hope that helps, but I can't really say which I prefer since I use both _________________ Excellent.. |

I prefer Xine.
Xine supports Sorenson Quicktime and I'm pretty sure it had support before mplayer did. |

What does that matter now that they both have it?
I personally prefer mplayer just because its what i've always used. Whenever I try Xine it just doesn't feel right or some codecs don't work and I end up going back.

I prefer xine above mplayer (both are better than any windows equivalent though) because it has proved itself more stable for me and has a better gui than mplayer (however I do like mplayer's menu when in full screen)
I now use totem (0.90) the most (based on xine-libs), it plays everything from sorensen 3 stuff to dvd's (the gui speed could use some improvement) |

Xine is best for DVDs, as it's menu system and UI are superior to mplayer. I didn't have much luck with Ogle but I know some people love it.
mplayer is better at about everything else, and is usually very optimized for your platform, and if you install/configure it right, can play just about anything.

I use ogle for DVD's and mplayer for everything else.
Ogle is awesome, supports dvdnavigation and whatsuch.
I also has a low over head, and plays all my dvd's (including different regions) well. |

I use VLC (videoLAN) for DVDs, and mplayer for everything else.
Ive never had a problem using that combination of players.
VLC has much the same features of Ogle as described above, but does not require you to mount the disc before playing, and will also pick the default track for you (which normally is the full movie with extra features aswell, so im never complaining). |

I like mplayer, it seems to support more codecs and is GNOME friendly...
I am in fact using to reencode all my wma files into mp3s, mplayer in batch mode might be an interesting feature. [I had to disable the GUI to do it] |

I just love mplayer, and I use it for everything.
Just check the mplayer plugin for mozilla. (mplayerplug-in) _________________ -- Vasco Moço |

i use mplayer as well.
it is not necessary to use kmplayer just because you use kde. i have tried kmplayer before, but prefer gmplayer.
you could always just set the file associations and then you would never need the gui. |

Xine has one feature that really makes it worthwile:
It is really easy to set up for tv out and when you have it set up it is very easy to use (perfect... 2x keypress)
You will need an nvidia card with tv out and xine will cooperate with "nvtv", the nvidia tv-out application (also in portage) . By just pressing "f" you cycle through windows/fullscreen/tv-out mode. pressing "a" will change aspect ration when needed. You may need to set it up for your needs (xine-xonfig panel) and you may have to create you own perfect fitting tv-out mode(s) (like i did ). Read the documentation with nvtv for info how to do that. (have nvtv start at boot, there is a /etc/init.d script)
When it works it is easier to watch a dvd/divx over your tv out than with any other app inlcuding that other great desktop OS.
I know this to work with the xinelib 0.9x series . Don't know about 1.0 beta
Code: |
## emerge -C xine-lib
emerge nvtv xine-ui xine-dvdnav
|
xine-ui still brings up xine-lib 0.9.13 here so that should be ok.
FURTHERMORE:
On my desktop I made a link that issues the following command:
pressing that will start playing the DVD and then pressing f twice will put it on tV. Did I mention how well AC3 5.1 works with xine (setting under "audio") and the emu10k1 driver you can emerge?
you'll need a SB live ! 5.1 or above for that, but they are dirt cheep and it works fantastically (exept the volume control needing some getting used to...)

Berkz: I installed Kplayer a couple of days ago and just love it! I have tried KMplayer too, but didn't like that as much.

I've never been able to get mplayer to play DVDs without skipping frames nastily - xine worked out of the box (though there's something horrid about the dependencies in ~x86 at least). |

I like xine best. It plays everything I have every tried, and plays without skipping.
mplayer just skips random frames all the time, so the playback is unwatchable. I have never found a solution for that. |

I also use pornview (which uses xine) to jump around between different videos so I don't have to close the last video window everytime I jump to a new video.
Xine works better for me then anything I'm aware of in windows, it's a nice change from a few years ago. Xine will play almost all partial videos while ms media player has problems with a lot of them, xine plays corrupted videos a lot better and xine even plays more videos while ms media player (in windows xp with the latest version and divx installed) will complain about not having or being able to find the codec sometimes. Now that I found pornview jumping around between different videos is also easier now.
mplayer also works great, I just happen to prefer xine because of a few minor differences. |

mplayer & kmplayer seems to work best for my stuff.
I find xine has issues with some codecs. |

Not trying to start a flame war here, but I've got to disagree. Once you've got the codecs installed for Windows Media Player, it works much better than any linux media player, in my experience. Granted the EULA on it is one of the high points of Microsoft's evil, but for just playing avi's and mpeg's it beats xine or mplayer hands down imo when you've got the codecs installed (which generally just requires the Nimo codec pack). _________________ Excellent.. |
