Moved from Installing Gentoo and changed title from "updating and gentoo 2.2" to "gnome 2.2"

emerge gnome should install gnome version 2.2

As for xfree, you can pin a version in /var/cache/edb/world by adding to the top of the file:
Code:
<=x11-base/xfree-4.2.1-r2
Replacing the version with the one you want installed.

You can type
Code:
emerge -f {packagename}

and that will only download the required tarballs. Then you can emerge normally and it will use the locally stored packages.

Are you on x86 hardware, or PPC, or something else?

Try emerge sync again, using a different server maybe. I'm showing libgnomeui-2.2.0.1 unmasked and stable on x86.

I got those errors when I emerged Gnome 2.2 also. I think that if it is a new Gentoo install you almost have to go through and emerge each of the dependancies one at a time. I was getting tons of "masked" errors, but when I emerged the masked package by itself, they would work. I never had any compile errors and I am now using a great Gnome 2.2 system. It just took a lot of manual emerging.
