OK, very weird thing has happened.

Earlier I emerged i2c & lm_sensors and I recompiled my kernel to get sensors working, and they work fine.

On rebooting the system did a check of my hdd because it had been mounted 36 times.

Then I noticed that I could no longer launch evolution to check my mail. Then I noticed some other programs didn't work - gftp and vncviewer are two that spring to mind. In my attempt to locate the missing files I used find, but that too is suddenly missing (although portage shows find-utils installed)

Interestingly all the evolution-* files are still in /usr/bin, just evolution is missing.

I tried to emerge evolution again (before I noticed other stuff was missing) but it threw up an error:
Code:

checking for pkg-config... no
*** The pkg-config script could not be found. Make sure it is
*** in your path, or set the PKG_CONFIG environment variable
*** to the full path to pkg-config.
*** Or see http://www.freedesktop.org/software/pkgconfig to get pkg-config.
configure: error: Library requirements (gtkhtml-1.1 >= 1.1.7) not met; consider adjusting the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable if your libraries are in a nonstandard prefix so pkg-config can find them.

gkrellm2 no longer starts and thows up the error and then seg faults:
Code:

(gkrellm2:3229): Gdk-WARNING **: gdkdrawable-x11.c:764 drawable is not a pixmap or window

[1]+ Segmentation fault      gkrellm2

I was planning to do an emerge -u world overnight, but now when I do an emerge -up world, the listing is different. I don't remember all that was there, but before it said portage needed updating, now it doesn't.

help! :( :(

Well after emerging rsync (I found rsync had gone missing too), and pkgconfig again, my emerge -up world looks ok and I can emerge evolution.

copying the gftp file from /usr/bin got gftp working again so it's obviously just the files in /usr/bin that have gone missing and not other parts of applications/packages.

I'm still lost as to why so many things suddenly went missing.
