I understand now (from other posts) that 32bit binaries are desired under almost all cases.

My first kernel came from sparc-sources and I made it 64bit. Would I have quicker system with a 32bit kernel? (for the same reasons 64bit binaries add overhead?)

I tried to compile gentoo-dev-sources-2.6.10-r2 in the sparc handbook instructions it says you type:

Quote:
(For 2.6 kernel, sparc32)
# make && make modules_install

But I didn't have an image file in arch/sparc/boot/image as the docs say I should.

I guess I should have been more clear. In arch/sparc/boot/ there was no image file. There were a couple files, but none that remotely resembled an image.

Right off... make menuconfig runs:
scripts/kconfig/mconf arch/sparc64/Kconfig

Seems like I would need to tweak something before make menuconfig to get a 32bit kernel?

If you have a sun4u/UltraSparc system, you need a sparc64 kernel. I believe 32-bit kernels will not even boot (unlike Solaris), but if they do, they will probably be slower anyway.

If you have 64bit processors (any Sun Ultra System) then use a 64bit kernel, the binaries you run will be 32 bit anyway since userland (all bar the kernel) is 32bit even on thease machines.

If you are using a Sparc Station or similar with a 32bit kernel then its all 32bit and much slower ;)

Well but you can't directly see wether it's slower because of a 32bit kernel or because of the speed a sparcstation can offer :wink:
