I am looking to run a liveCD of gentoo on a SPARC system in the hopes of recovering /changing a root password we have lost. Are there any tools are the gentoo distro that can be of assistance to us?

Boot to Live CD and chroot to your onboard disks and change the password from there. Or edit the Shadow password once you have mounted your root disk.
