Is your /etc/hosts.allow and /etc/hosts.deny filled in correctly? It should read (for instance):
Code:

~$ cat /etc/hosts.allow
portmap: 192.168.0.20
lockd:   192.168.0.20
rquotad: 192.168.0.20
mountd:  192.168.0.20
statd:   192.168.0.20
~$ cat /etc/hosts.deny
ALL: ALL

Do you have quota-support on your system? If not, perhaps the quotard is obsolete and should not be run...

no, i don't have quota support compiled in - why does it start as default anyway?
i got nfs working by doing this in hosts.allow
Code:

portmap: 192.168.0.0
lockd:   192.168.0.0
rquotad: 192.168.0.0
mountd:  192.168.0.0
statd:   192.168.0.0

just allowing 192.168.0.2 produced the error i mentioned earlier.
maybe the server(192.168.0.1) needs to be allowed as well?

That might be true, I have nfs working fine and have both in the hosts.allow
Code:
ALL: LOCAL
ALL: 192.168.0.2
ALL: 192.168.0.1
portmap: 192.168.0.1
portmap: 192.168.0.2
locked: 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.0.2
mountd: 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.0.2
rquotad: 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.0.2
statd: 192.168.0.1 , 192.168.0.2

I haven't gotten around to combining ALL and portmap, but they can be combined like the others also.
