|
|
This post is just to inform users about the current state of ATI drivers for 64bit Linux. There aren't any yet.
Initially, the amd64 team was hearing that the drivers would be released "sometime during the summer". Now we are hearing that they may be released "by the end of the year". So I wouldn't hold my breath.
What does this mean for ATI users?
Well, things have improved somewhat since Gentoo has moved to xorg-x11. The radeon driver included with xorg is fast for 2D video. That's a Good Thing(tm).
However, 3D accelleration isn't available. So if you have any interest in 3D gaming, you should consider a video card or laptop with an NVidia chipset. NVidia drivers are very stable now and offer a 32bit compatibility layer.
This thread will be updated as we hear news from ATI or through the grapevine. _________________ Jason Huebel

ATi has released accellerated drivers for x86-64. Users are reporting varying success with these new drivers. Please let us know if you've been successful in installing and using them.
An ebuild is forthcoming, so be watching for it in portage. _________________ Jason Huebel

direct rendering: Yes
kwisatz@dune ~ $ glxgears
6299 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1259.800 FPS
6880 frames in 5.0 seconds = 1376.000 FPS

after two days i get it working, most credits go to people in "AMD64 in December", one of my biggest problem was in gcc-3.3
after compiling with gcc-3.4 opengl started working.
I have tested tuxracer and it is ok _________________ Best Regards,

success after much pain.
Starting here is fantastic.
Got me right where I wanted to.
Although one detail..
after you get to ../opengl/ati ..
# mv libGL.so.1.2 _libGL.so.1.2
# wget ....
# ldconfig
The truth should set you free. _________________ Votre moment detente

I have gotten it working also. It seems to be about the same as the last version of the 32-bit drivers for speed on my machine. I have a mobile Radeon 9600. UT2004 is still a little choppy for me, though.

It works for me too, but ive got only ~620 fps with Radeon 9800 and AMD64 3200+... don't know what I'm supposed to expect!
And i cant change my resolution due to an error with xrandr...
But nevertheless, better than without 3d... |

I've gotten the drivers to work without a problem. I had to remerge (re-emerge?) the drivers when I upgraded form 2.6.7 to 2.6.10, but I'm assuming that's because of kernel patches, and is very normal.
I've only played UT2004 Demo so far, but everything looked good and ran fine.
One difference I noticed is that by 32bit chroot apps that use X (mplayer and firefox) aren't able to connect to the X server. I haven't played around with this yet though.
A general request: While running fglrxconfig, I got hit with a lot of questions I didn't understand and just used the default. If someone could write up a guide to the options that would help us optimize the drivers, that would be greatly appreciated. _________________ Nadeem Kolia

Ignorance asking here If I don't game and/or do other 3D type stuff, is there any other compelling reason for me to use the new driver? Does it just generally look better than the x.org driver? TIA, Bill |

Probalby no, I'd say stick with the xorg driver if it works and you don't need 3d...
Although, I have had no problems with 2d and the driver so it might be fine to give it a try. |

Something I've noticed, is that switching to console works for me with the new fglrx. I've had several problems with this using the xorg-driver and vesa console. |

Good job, emerged latest ati-drivers (revision 3 ebuild), ran fglrxconfig, had to switch Keyboard driver in the X config file it created though from "Keyboard" to "kbd". Then I ran modules-update, opengl-update ati, booted X, and ran glxgears:
12181 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2436.200 FPS
14466 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2893.200 FPS
14468 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2893.600 FPS
14491 frames in 5.0 seconds = 2898.200 FPS
glxinfo:
direct rendering: Yes
OpenGL vendor string: ATI Technologies Inc.
OpenGL renderer string: RADEON 9500 Pro Generic
OpenGL version string: 1.3.4769 (X4.3.0-8.8.25)
Looking good _________________ -Kow |

Whenever I do a
after it, when i try to startx is locksup on booting x, gives me nothing but a black screen.
I've tried changing the xorg.conf After using fglrxconfig to match the original xorg.conf main's settings since they work, didn't fix anything. _________________ Posting for dummies |
