Neat little box but I'm not sure what I'd do with it once I got it. Most cool games won't run on it (applies to all Apples). If I understand right, many Linux apps won't compile right for PPC (or is that just portage on OSX?). So I'm left with a neat looking machine for surfing and writing documents. I'll pass.
Anyone have suggestions on what to do with an Apple for a computer enthusiast and not a grandma? _________________ Meh. |

Dude. This apple could easily be used for the TV. Put this on top a television (regular PC cases are far too big and heavy). Connect. View all your precious movies and porn on your TV.
Fantastic. |

I suppose that's true, but I could build an x86 for that purpose cheaper or mod an Xbox. _________________ Meh. |

though one could just as easily use a dvd player for that.
sure, it would take some time to convert to dvd/(s)vcd
format, but it would probably be cheaper and a dvd-player
is nice and flat, thus often easier to place.
i see the mini-mac as a gadget - something for if you have
money to spare and want a new toy..
but i must admit that it looks cool _________________ proud to be a scout and a chronic penguin hugger

Yeah and the options are expensive too. Give it enough ram to run OS X comfortably and a keyboard and you're already $133 above the base price. _________________ Meh. |

Video of Steve Jobs and the Mac Mini:
http://zdnet.com.com/1606-2-5532412.html
Doesn't that just want to make you buy one? ITS SO SMALL AND SEXY!!!!!
It's quiet. I'm telling you. And no, I don't want to burn all my porn to a DVD and view it on a DVD player. I want them all stored in one small sexy box, Mac Mini, and view them from there. |

Actually, most cool games do run on it....at least, for me, personally, other than Half Life 2, there's a Mac version for everything.
Classics:
StarCraft, Warcraft (all of them), Diablo I and 2
New Games:
Doom III, KOTR2, Rainbow 6....
Of course this is only scraping the surface, just a few that come to mind instantly.
There's lots of good companies like Aspyr
http://www.aspyr.com/games.php/mac/complete/
that make lots of good games for the Mac.
Go to www.insidemacgames.com for some more stuff, and stop the FUD, please |

It probably wasn't meant as FUD. I and most of the people in my dorm I showed that list to (including a powerbook user) never knew that there were that many games out for PPC. I'm impressed and it pushes me further towards wanting to buy that Mini Apple. _________________ Still using Gentoo, just too busy for forums these days. |

Regardless of the intent, as a lifelong Mac user, the issue's a bit sensitive . Definatly not meant as a personal attack, I hope it didn't come off as such...but yeah, lots of kick-ass games for the Mac. I barely scratched the surface. |

I'd be tempted just for that and Sims 2 (yea, I like Sims 2 :P). |

i have already decided to buy this machine. My uses for it:
a) I will use it to try out OS X. Previously I would have had to buy an used Apple to do this. And they would have been quite large and quite slow in the end. This machine has quite powerful CPU, so there's no problem.
b) If I decided that OS X is not for me, I would use the Mini as a personal server. Instead of having either a noisy and big tower-PC or slow Mini-ITX-machine, I will have this absolutely gorgerous machine that is not only silent but powerful as well. And I wouldn't have to hide it in the closet, it looks so good, and I would propably spend my time simply caressing it with my fingers .
Either way: a win-win scenario . _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

Use your existing keyboard. That is the idea with this machine. Plan is that people who want to switch to Mac from PC, can now simply take out their PC-tower and replace it with the Mini.
The more I look at this machine, the more I am in awe! Previously, I planned to get Mini-ITX-machine from Hush, but those are about twice as expensive while they are about half as fast as the Mini! Seriously, this is a no-brainer for me! _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

Ah well that's good. For me I wouldn't buy the Mini personally because it's underpowered and I wouldn't want to drop $2k+ on a good Mac and not be able to play HL2. I'll stick with PC for the time being, but thanks for pointing those out, that's more than I thought. _________________ Meh. |

It may very well be useless to you, but that doesn't mean it's useless to everyone. Thanks for the constructive comment! _________________ Still using Gentoo, just too busy for forums these days. |

I'll definately be getting one, when I get a larger tv that is I've always wanted to try out macosX for real not just emulated on m laptop, other than that it will be beautiful to have this machine as a small fileserver @ the university I'm attending next winter, just hide it under the bed with an 250 gb disc attached to it through firewire _________________ http://www.thoron.org |

im not sure if anyone noticed this or not... but since that mini-mac has been released, apple's stock rose up almost an entire ten points. when i look back to a coupla years ago, i recalled apple's stock fluctuating between 14-22. then, microsoft was at about 70-114.
look at the numbers now! go to the following URL:
http://personal.fidelity.com/news/quotes/
type in MSFT, AAPL (with a comma).
contrast and compare. look at the 52-week highs and lows.
granted, apple is more than just a software company, but they must be doing something right. _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

i dont have a usb keyboard... i'd be forced to buy a new one. it's a good thing they include that dvi/vga adapter... otherwise i'd have to buy one myself. those things dont come cheap. neither do new monitors
i think overall, it's probably a good deal. but i know that if i were to purchase one of those, id get bored of it rather quickly. once i realized that i couldnt run my familiar apps, and would be forced to go on a wild goose chase trying to find apps that emulate the same functions as my preferred windows counterparts, i'd regret spending the 500 dollars.
unfortunately, it's not for me. i'm not big on change, and using an apple is a pretty big one (when it comes to being productive, that is). _________________ I used gentoo BEFORE it was cool. |

Look at the link you yourself have:
System Requirements
Mac OS X 10.3 check
CPU G4 @ 1000 MHz check
RAM 512 MB upgrade
HD 2.9 GB Disk Space check
Graphics 64 MB Graphics Card ...see below
It says you need a 64 MB card to play WoW...but I've heard of people playing it with a 32 MB one and being okay. So I dunno.
Doing a bit more research, Blizzard's Site says this for system Reqs:
Mac® System OS X 10.3.5 OS:
* 933 MHz or higher G4 or G5 processor
* 512 MB RAM or higher; DDR RAM recommended
* ATI or NVIDIA video hardware with 32 MB VRAM or more
* 4 GB or more of available hard drive space
* MacOS X 10.3.5 or newer
* 56k or higher modem with an Internet connection
So I'm the Mini Mac should be able to handle it just fine. Maybe not have every graphics widget turned on (I'm guessing InsideMac Games are suggesting those reqs to play), but It'll be able to play it fairly well. |

If you'd ever end up buying it, consider getting Bluetooth and the Bluetooth keyboard...wireless is nice

Well, Apple's idea with this machine isn't so much to get you to replace your PC with it...you're supposed to get a KVM and set both on your desk (the mini's so small it would fit). Then try out OSX. It's similar in concept to drug dealers (heh)...give 'em a dimebag and soon they're buying kilos. Anyway, the idea is that slowly, you'll start using osx more and more...till you realize you don't boot your PC. Then, you're hooked. lol.
kraylus wrote: | im not sure if anyone noticed this or not... but since that mini-mac has been released, apple's stock rose up almost an entire ten points. |
I didn't, but that's really interesting. I wish I had money to invest...
Quote: | granted, apple is more than just a software company, but they must be doing something right. |
Yeah, Apple is both a hardware AND a software company, but they're really more of a hardware company. That's where they make thier revenue...and why they'd never port OSX to x86. Yeah, they'd sell more copies of OSX, but they make the real money in the hardware... |

thats's SW33T!
if I had the money, I would buy one for my lil' sister ^^
she'll get this noisy piece of crap, when my iBook arrived and gentoo is ready (I'll use the x86 it as a distcc-slave), for gaming (Sims 2 and stuff)...
but if I could, I would buy her such a sw33ty and the Sims2 for Mac (the mac version is at alpha, i think), so she could game AND use a real OS*
*sigh* *waits for his iBook*
*) a stable, half-way secure (nothing is absolutly secure ) *NIX-like OS, for which I could use nice gnu tools, to repair it |

The mini mac should be able to run Gentoo fine. The technical specs are almost simular to that of the first Powerbook Aluminum laptops released a year ago.
The only thing that will not work is the wireless, because broadcom has refused to release the specifications so other Linux Kernel hackers can engineer a driver for it.
The bluetooth module works and is the same one you can buy for the Powermac g5, which works with linux.
The memory seems to be a PC2700 (DDR333) chip. You can buy a 1gb stick off of pricewatch for a little above $100 for generic OEM ram. |
