Kismet with USE=gps Wants Gpsdrive Installed?

  • Quote

I'm setting up a headless machine in my car, and I went to install Kismet. My USE variable has GPS in it, since I have a serial GPS antenna hooked up to the system, and I want to log coordinates from kismet.

I don't have a need for gpsdrive, though, since the machine isn't going to have X installed, or have any graphical interface at all.

Yet, when I try to emerge kismet with "gps" in the USE variable, it automatically tries for gpsdrive, too... which of course tries to pull in XOrg.

If I take out "gps", does that mean that Kismet won't interface with the antenna? It seems like it should be able to interface without necessarily needing to have gpsdrive, a separate program, installed alongside. Why are these two things tied together?

Don't blame me. I didn't vote for him.

I guess what I'm trying to understand, before delving into the ebuild later tonight, is why the USE variable "gps" is interpreted as "i want gpsdrive installed" rather than "i want kismet to talk to the gpsd daemon."

That is, of course, the point... gpsdrive is a secondary function that you might want to use with Kismet, but it certainly isn't a "dependency" for GPS functionality. Anyone have some input on this?
