Combine with this and that, and you're good to go!!
Those nice little ipods are cool too, if only they played ogg vorbis...

In my experience, 256MB is not enough memory for a Mac (with OS X, anyway). They have run much better with 512MB and even 1GB.
That said, I finally have a good option to satisfy my Mac-at-home appetite. |
I used 10.1 with 256 for a long while, and NEVER used more than 150MB, so my question again? What is being done with all that ram, are you all not closing your applications? _________________ ubi primum potero, me hinc subduco. |

NANOSAUR 2 INCLUDED!!!
I see a giant hacker community surrounding this thing. Much like the $250 server dell sells from time to time. _________________ Inspiron 4100 & Sun UltraAXe

Looks like it will be able to run Mac OS X server as well, since the hardware requirements for the server package are all the other platforms as well, including eMac.....
Slap that Terabyte of USB disk storage on there and voila!, an uber quiet server arrangement that works in any office...... _________________ emerge -u mystatusinlife |

yes , but what about gentoo support , whats ppc-gentoo like these days ? will we be able to get glx working on it etc. ?
what type of video out driver for movies?
so baically what im interested in is a multi - media box / router.
can we get
1. bluetooth support
# Optional internal 54-Mbps AirPort Extreme Card (based on IEEE 802.11g standard; Wi-Fi Certified for 802.11g and 802.11b interoperability)3
2. tv out support
# VGA video output (using included adapter) to support analog resolutions up to 1920 x 1080 pixels
# S-video and composite video output to connect directly to a TV or projector (requires Apple DVI to Video Adapter, sold separately)
3. dvd/rw support
# Optional SuperDrive (DVD±RW/CD-RW): writes DVD-R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD-RW discs at up to 2x speed, writes DVD+R discs at up to 4x speed, writes DVD+RW discs at up to 2.4x speed, reads DVDs at up to 8x speed, writes CD-R discs at up to 16x speed, writes CD-RW discs at up to 8x speed, reads CDs at up to 24x speed
4. glx would be nice, / but not essential.
# ATI Radeon 9200 graphics processor with AGP 4X support
would be sweet if we can get this.
Im moving into a new flat, I need a wireless router, ill get this instead if it works out. Hook up a projector, sorted. |

No you can't. If you want something of that size, you have to use Mini-ITX. And their performance sucks when compared to G4 and they cost more or less the same, if not more!
And go ahead: compare this machine to some full-tower monstrocity. It will still have competetive features, price and performance! And not to mention design! I dare you!
Quote: | this is a very bad move if they want to compete in the low end market, no monitor and keyboard when all the other low end pc makers have monitor, keyboard, mouse, and printer included for about the same price. |
you get it.... yet you don't get it. This is meant for people who want to switch from PC to Mac. And they already have keyborads and displays!
Seriously: I don't own any MAc-hardware. But I WILL buy this machine. I might not keep OS X on it, I would like to have a tiny and stylish (and quiet!) personal server. This thing would do nicely . _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

It's exactly the opposite in fact.
Like I said: compare this machine to some Dell in the same price-range. I dare you!
And besides: so what if it doesn't have keyboard or mouse? You can't spend few bucks and buy them yourself?
Hell, I made it easy for you: Dell Dimension 3000. Price: $599 ($499 after rebate). It has a monitor, but what are the differences?
Mac has Radeon 9200, Dell has a crappy integrated vid-card
Mac has CD-RW/DVD, Dell has CD-ROM
Mac has a stylish aluminium case. Dell has a case made of.... gray plastic
Mac has OS X, dell has XP Home
Dell has smaller HD than the $599 Mini has
Mac is tiny, Dell is big
If we change the specs of the Dell to match the specs of the Mini (no display, bigger HD, CD-RW/DVD, XP Pro) it's price increases to 707 dollars (and that's WITHOUT antivirus/firewall/spyware!). And it still has that crappy vid-card and that horrible case and it's still big. So really: is the Mini expensive? _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

To further make my point: let's build a Mini-ITX-machine (all prices from www.mini.itx.com):
Case: Hoojum Cubit 3: 172e
MoBo: VIA EPIA MII 12000 LVDS - 1.2Ghz: 187e
CD: Panasonic CW8123 Slotload Slimline Combo CDRW/DVD: 100e
RAM: 256MB DDR2100: 50e
Vid-card: Integrated in the MoBo
CPU: 1.2GHz VIA Nehemiah (integrated in the MoBo)
HD: 40GB 3.5" HD: 50e
There, that just about does it. How much does it cost in total (not including shipping which is free with the Mini)? 559e. A bit cheaper than the more expensive Mini, but with less HD-space. But that Mini walks all over this machine when it come to performance! Hell, it has a CPU that is over twice as fast, and it's vid card is order of magnitude faster than on this machine! This machine would get massacred by the cheaper Mini as well! And this machine is WITHOUT software, whereas the Mini ships with OS X and iLife! If you want Windows, you have to add few hundred for Windows and antivirus. Linux is of course free. _________________ My tech-blog | My other blog |

Looks nice! If gentoo runs on it, I would like to have one. I can take it to office and plug it to monitor/keyboard that I have there, and at night bring it back home. It is perfect!
Also, the Radeon 9200 is a plus for linux, because one can use the open-source dri drivers in X. I heard that damned ATI and Nvidia do not distibute binary drivers for the ppc platform.
I read the hardware is pretty similiar to the emac. How hard is to install gentoo on an emac? Any bad experiences? |

Does anyone see ANY reasons why this thing wouldn't run Gentoo?
I've NEVER owned any PPC hardware... but this little thing might just change that.

OMG OMG OMG!!!!! I am getting one of these puppies! I think this is a GREAT move for Apple. a lot more people will be able to get one. And as mentioned previously, lots of people already own keboard, mouse etc. I am gonna get a few (cause I don't share well so The Husband will have to get his own) The main reason I have not purchased one before is the price. 500 bucks is oh so nice...especially for something as sexy and tiny ast that thing. Damn Apple is good! |

Sounds a nice box if you want a quiet workstation running Linux. 2 things bug me, though:
256 megs ram is not enough for me, 512 is ok, 1024 is way too expensive (the upgrade costs almost as much as the minimac itself).
I don't want to buy a computer with neither Windows nor OS X. Of course i can sell it afterwards, but i don't want to waste my time with stuff like that. |

DVI-VGA converters are reletively cheap nowadays, but they should include one with it.
on another note, i don't understand why all PC users think that they are restricted to windows. today for example i was in school and this kid was telling me how he downloaded spyware and his computer crashed and he couldn't print his assignment up. I then asked him why he uses windows if he obviously doesn't like it very much, and then im looked at like im an idiot. sigh.
I agree that this mac-mini is really codenamed "Project Switch!" I think that they are targeting mostly the iPod/Windows users with this one. _________________ Check out my awesome blog! (The Best Blog Ever)

do you mean this? http://www1.us.dell.com/content/products/features.aspx/featured_desktop1?c=us&cs=19&l=en&s=dhs
and you miss the point as well. 90% of the people out there who will buy this won't even use it for gaming of any kind so the video card is mute and won't upgrade to xp pro because home suits them just fine.
so lets take the cheaper $499 one to be fair.
add $75 to equal the 512mb of ram
add $50 to up the storage to the same as the best out of that group
add $58 for their keyboard and mouse
add $149 to put the support at the same level
even without a monitor the dell is still a better and cheaper buy but lets say somone wants a apple monitor with it. there cheapest is $999.
the main problem between me and you on this is that you are only thinking of what whould be acceptable to YOU in these machines. what i am trying to get across is this is a bad deal for any joe blow pc user who wants a new machine to replace his old one. |

ok i dunno if its been covered yet, but honesty, it takes regular DDR333, so dont do the apple store upgrade. Just go to newegg and get yourself a nice 1Gb stick for $150, or a 512Mb stick for $80 or whatever they go for these days. Never buy ram from apple. _________________ Does it also predict tomorrows lottery-numbers? -- Evangelion on The Bible

never buy anything but the box (i-pod inclusive) from apple. Maybe a monitor, they do look beautiful, but are not cost effective. _________________ ubi primum potero, me hinc subduco. |
