Summary:
There is a CPU monitoring application that starts with with a fully clothed woman, and as CPU usage gets higher, more and more clothes come off of her, leaving her completely naked.
The Debian community has debated including this as a package a lot, due to its possibly offensive nature. But Debian also maintains packages for religious texts, the Anarchism FAQ, etc.
This comes down to a question of free speech and of organizational responsibility.
In the past this discussion has come up in Gentoo and resulted in the "offensive" USE flag for offensive package components. Is there a similarly prescribed method for handling possibly offensive packages?
[Developers] Are there some kind of formal / informal package / ebuild content guidelines for gentoo?
Just curious and seeing what people's opinions are...

From what I've seen the general consensus seems to be "there's the offensive USE flag, you can set it to avoid offensive stuff, and therefore there should be no problem including potentially offensive stuff in portage as long it's not installed by default".
I think that's a fine stance.
There appears to be a tendency to apply a (sorry to call it that) "american" definition of "offensive content", disregarding that in most parts of the western world it's a non-issue to say "fuck" on the radio or show nipples in normal evening TV programming etc.
But then, who cares, really.

No, it's a cartoon of a woman.  Not that you're alone in making this mistake - many of the participants in the original discussion on debian-devel weren't aware of this distinction, either. Anyway, please let's not propagate this misinformation any further.

I don't think wjether or not it's a cartoon of a woman is really the issue. Besides the fact that a drawing isn't really any less potentially offensive than a photograph, what would we do with a similar package but with a photograph instead? Would it be different to what would be done with this package? Why? Where exactly is the line? |

Thank you for pointing that out. I apologize if it was misleading, but my original questions and thoughts still stand because regardless of nudity real or animated it stil has a potential to offend others.

PS - I personally am not offended by the above, but I was wondering the stance of the community and the developers of Gentoo. If we get into who is offended and who isn't and why, this post might as well descend into OTW. |

Do you really not agree that a greater number of people are likely to be offended by the real thing than by an artist's crude representation?
And more issues were raised than just simple concerns about personal prudishness. For example, with the addition of things like hot-babe to the archive, would the sale/distribution of an official Debian Sarge CD set to someone under the age of 18 within the US now constitute illegal distribution of pornography to a minor? I hope you can see that there'd be far more grounds to take that concern seriously if it were photos of a real flesh-and-blood woman we were talking about here.

Good point....you'd have to slap on some sort of US 'morality' watchdog rating sticker on any linux distro that shipped with hot-babe.... "MA or Teen" to protect yourself from any lawsuits resulting of some minor getting this naked woman (yes its a cartoon but doesnt mean someone still wont sue) on his or her desktop. Then you'd get some stores (out of the MILLIONS who ship Linux ...... ) who refused to carry it because of their stance on 'offensive' material.
I would think that an appropriate stance is to make it availble for download but not ship it for sale. Potentially offensive material WILL get labeled at some point, and then you won't get it shipped to Wal-Mart or Target..... (even if they had any distros I dont think I'd buy them there anyhow) . I could care less about any software I bought, but if my daughter could buy software with naked people and it wasnt clearly labeled, I know I'd be pretty upset. |

Whether thay be flesh-and-blood or an artist's rendition, no one would ever suggest such a package be in an official CD set, so I don't see what the problem is with them being in an online archive. |

I can't never get ebuilds to work. When will they add it to the rest of the portage stuff? Sounds like I would have to run glxgears, a lot. 
I'm not telling you what is on my KDE slideshow. I bet it would affend some though. Let's just say I like the google image search feature and a few nasty words.

No. The ebuilds themselves shouldn't contain any excessively offensive material, and packages included in GRP or stages shouldn't have any legally questionable content, but general packages aren't covered. After all, we don't ship programs, we just give you a set of rules for how to build them.
I'd like to point out that you're required to install at least two packages containing the word "fuck", at least one package containing quotes from the Bible (which as we all know is racist, homophobic, misogynistic and illegal in several countries) and a copy of the US constitution as part of a base Gentoo install. |
