Will Gentoo PPC work with GCC 3.1?

If so, what changes do I have to make to the instructions at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?p=16312#16312 to make it work for ppc. ie - what compiler flags for a G4 powerbook (7450, 667MHz)?

Or would it be better to stick with 2.95.3?

I believe gcc 3.1 builds more optimized binaries...

We would have to generate our own profile for gcc-3.1. We're pretty busy still making sure everything works on the default system, so that might not happen any time soon.

On the other hand, if you feel like experimenting, go ahead. Take a look at the differences between:
1) the regular gentoo profile and the gcc3.1 profile
2) the regular gentoo profile and the ppc profile
Then see if you can generate a gcc3.1/ppc profile for yourself (use the lower set of ppc optimisations in make.conf). If it works, let us know and we'll add it to rsync!

It works for me in the sense that I was able to bootstrap and emerge system,
although I can't testify to the reliability yet, as that machine is still chrooted having
booted off the CD and is currently compiling a kernel.

Here's all I did:

Untar stage 1 tarball
Chroot over to it
Set up /etc/make.conf
Edit /etc/make.profile/packages GCC line
change it from 2.95.3 to 3.1-r5
run bootstrap.sh
comment out the reiserfsprogs line in /etc/make.profile/packages
emerge system

The reiserfsprogs did not build correctly, which may or may not be a problem for you.
I'm using XFS on that machine, so it wasn't a huge loss for me.

The hardware is a Blue&White (Yosemite) G3 Rev. 1. The compile flags I used were:

-O3 -pipe -mcpu=750 -mpowerpc-gfxopt -mmultiple -mstring

To enable networking initially, I had to modprobe bmac.
