There are too many users at the XWindow prompt, including, among others: portage, cron, etc. How do I set it up so that only my user and root appear? |

You dont say what display manager you are using, however I am guessing that it is kdm.
Open kcontrol, click system maintenance, then click login manager. You will be able to remove all those extra logins and display only the ones you want.
You dont need to be in kde to do this, you can simply type kcontrol in an xterm window and it will open. You will need to be root to change the login settings and that is accomplished by clicking the "adminstrator mode" button on the bottom of the screen after opening the kdm dialog. You will have an opportunity to put in your root password

Or you could simply edit /usr/kde/3.1/share/config/kdm/kdmrc, enter all the users you explicitly want to be shown in the login window and hide everyone else:
Code: |
ShowUsers=Selected
SelectedUsers=root,you,her,whoever
|
ShowUsers=None permits you to get rid of the whole selection... |

The problem is fixed. I was actually in kdm and I simply did a:
kdesu kcontrol
Then I went into System > Login Manager
Then I clicked the Users tab and simply changed the Show Users section from "All but no-show" to "Selected Only". |
