mosix? well i checeked out mosix it seems cool but i have a question. Can i run any app with this type of cluster? I would like to build a cluster where i can run most of my apps. but mostly stuff like dvdrip to rip and encode dvds.
if that cant do that is tehre any other type of cluster that would let me do what i want? _________________ omp:

I have an openmosix cluster. You can run any app. It automatically migrates the processes to free nodes. I find openmosix easy to install and use. |

mosix will migrate ANY process to another machine if it will improve speed. Gnome and KDE will not be migrated because it would slow things down, while lame or mpg->avi or something would migrate to the fastest machine OR the machine with the most resources.
very easy, nice way to get more performance out of large processing jobs. |

When you say Gnome or KDE will not be migrated... Are you talking about just the base libraries of Gnome or KDE, or does that include any graphical programs like Kate or Konqueror?

can you sugest any good readings, that will help understanding/seting up clusters?
I have three computers available for this but i am not sure if it is worth the work to set them up, would it be a actual (noticable) performance gain?
another question i can't find an anwer for is if it is a security issue to have a cluster connected to the net ...

Linux Clustering: Building and Maintaining Linux Clusters
I have it & have read it. Good book on both High Availability/Uptime clustering & also High Performance clustering like tradidtional Beowulf or process migration like Mosix. I have built a high performance cluster just to see how to do it. That was ayear ago and I barely knew of Mosix at that time.
I recommend that book because it touches on the many facets of clustering from setup, security, to maintainence & scaleability.
Check here for a search engine that finds the best price on books: http://www.addall.com/
I hope this helps.
