Okay, I keep hearing a lot about [url="http://members.optusnet.com.au/ckolivas/kernel/"]CK kernel[/url] a few times in the forums. Who else is running this? Would I expect a few speed ups etc?

I'm currently running mjc-sources at the moment and am curious about CK kernel...

I just installed the ck kernel with the timeslice patch. So far I'm happy, but if I'm really honest, nothing was wrong with the gentoo kernel. I just wanted something else, I heard the ck kernel was fast.

Well, I can't really tell the difference, but I've only used for a day or so. The only thing that's a pity is that my harddrive performance is a little less, hdparm -tT /dev/md0 gives:

+- 92 Mb/sec with gentoo kernel
+- 90 Mb/sec with ck kernel

:P

uname -a:

Code:

Linux dragon.net 2.4.20-pre10-mjc2 #4 Mon Dec 23 14:13:21 GMT 2002 i686 AMD Duron(tm) Processor AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

And the hdparm of this:

Code:

hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  1.09 seconds =117.43 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  2.23 seconds = 28.70 MB/sec

I have to admit that it is more speedier than gentoo kernel. However, you should see my work box..

Code:

Linux enlil 2.4.20-pre10-mjc2 #3 Mon Dec 23 10:37:44 GMT 2002 i686 AMD Athlon(tm) XP 1800+ AuthenticAMD GNU/Linux

hdparm -tT /dev/hda

/dev/hda:
 Timing buffer-cache reads:   128 MB in  0.46 seconds =278.26 MB/sec
 Timing buffered disk reads:  64 MB in  1.72 seconds = 37.21 MB/sec

I should really test out CK kernel and a couple of others on some UML somewhere.

Gentoo 2.4.20-r1 includes most of the patches in CK, so there so really be no need to change kernels once it goes stable..

If you really want a good desktop experience:

ACCEPT_KEYWORDS="~x86" emerge development-sources

Isn't that like unstable packages etc? (Or gentoo 1.2/1.3 was in the old days).

You will see a big difference once you really stress the machine and run a lot of processes simultaneously.

This kernel (and others) has been extensively discussed in this thread:
