I'm running SusE and MEPIS and i was just wondering if there was a way to copy my kernel config from either one of those two seeing as how i had lots of trouble last time getting it right when installing gentoo. Also same goes for xorg is there a way to copy config?

Should i use my 2004.2 cd again or should i brun the new iso?

mepis is mounted /root at /hda3
and suse is /hda4

Can i use my MEPIS grub to boot the gentoo kernel or do i need to use make 3 new partiitions (new boot new swap and new root)

Yes you can copy your .config safely. It will make no difference.

your kernel config file should be /usr/src/linux/.config
Provided you've installed that kernel sources in suse & mepis etc.
although you might also find it as /proc/config.gz

even if you use those make sure you still follow the guidelines as detailed in gentoo handbook.
not sure as to what you are asking about mepis grub.
Are saying that you have both Mepis & Gentoo on the same system ?
If the answer is yes, then yes you can do so, simply edit the /boot/grub/grub.conf and add the required parameters.

As far xorg is concerned I dunno if suse & mepis have same layout as gentoo. In any circumstances you can always copy over the /etc/X11/xorg.conf file and see if it works.
Or you could use xorgcfg or xorgconfig to setup your config file.

Hope this helps

Note: After you copy your existing .config file from /usr/src/current-kernel to /usr/src/newkernel, don't forget to cd /usr/src/newkernel, make menuconfig, SAVE and exit.

Yes i have mepis, suse and im attempting to put Gentoo in the system also. MEPIS runs the boot loader. No stand-alone boot partition, its just written in the mbr.

thx for your help guys :D

Is it worth it to use a new 2004.3 cd or stick with 2004.2?

Is Knoppix a gentoo based distro or debian based?

Copying your XOrgConfig shouldnt be any problem. Copying your kernel config _shouldn't _ present any difficulties either, but it will sometimes. I do recall copying a SuSE kernel config to a new Gentoo system a few years ago, and having some unresolved config parameters. But it was really a non-issue as long as you go through menuconfig and check everything.

And yes, you can boot the gentoo kernel from Mepis's grub. Just edit (from Mepis) /boot/grub/menu.lst (or /boot/grub/grub.conf, whichever exists) and add an entry for Gentoo. You should have no problems if they are all on the same harddrive. And no, you wouldn't need a boot partition after that, but you should copy your gentoo kernel over to Mepis's /boot and load it from there just to be safe. Grub isn't perfect.

Debian-based. In future, check out Distrowatch's distribution independence page to discover what any listed distribution is a derivative of.

I've used liveCD only for 2 purposes. For new installation, and on ocassion when you have a dead system.
Thank the later has never happened to me per se.

Only install I went dead was when my SATA drives changed from sda to hda
:)
