I have lame-3.93.1 compiled on my system and working fine. Used 14x's the past few days also.
Using vanilla-kernel 2.4.19 and gcc-3.2.1

The only problem I had with lame and it wasn't lame's fault (I don't think) is that Audacity will segfault trying to use it.
Saved thanks to being able to use the command-line though and just ran Lame by itself.
