emerging squirremail resulted in 23 new packages being installed - including X windows, qt, and jre!?. I was a little miffed at this - I had been hoping to build a minimal system. I'm not sure what squirrelmail needs from X windows, but I'd guess it isn't much (libXpm?). Same for qt and jre. Seems like a lot of overhead. What suggestions do people have for avoiding package bloat? If X gets built and all I needed was libXpm, how can I figure out what stuff can safely be removed? How can I figure out what exactly was installed? I'd like to have a minimal server - I have no need for an Xserver - it doesn't have a monitor.

thanks

put -X -qt and -java in your make.conf, under the USE="" setting.

You need to read /etc/make.conf, /use/portage/profiles/use.desc, and about
4,000 posts on the forum concerning USE flags.
