Apache certificate

I know you're supposed to purchase these, but I want to make one myself for testing purposes while I am coding ecommerce apps in PHP.

How do you do this? I saw my friend had done it once. I have heard that you have to run "make certificate" in a mod_ssl patched apache source, but how would I go about doing this with portage?
