i tried to install my HP DeskJet 3420 printer. So i loaded all the necessary modules, emerged cups, foomatic & hpijs and ran:

Code:
# grep 3420 /usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/*
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-DeskJet_3420.xml:<printer id="printer/HP-DeskJet_3420">
/usr/share/foomatic/db/source/printer/HP-DeskJet_3420.xml:  <model>DeskJet 3420</model>

then:

Code:
# foomatic-configure -s cups -p HP-DeskJet_3420 -c file:/dev/usb/lp0 -n DeskJet -d hpijs
The printer HP DeskJet 3420 (ID: HP-DeskJet_3420) is not supported by the driver hpijs!
Could not run "foomatic-combo-xml"/"foomatic-perl-data"! at /usr/lib/perl5/site_perl/5.8.0/Foomatic/DB.pm line 545.

I don't understand :? When i lookup my printer @ http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net/productssupported.php i see that my printer is supported by hpijs :? I have the latest version of hpijs installed:

Code:
# emerge -s hpijs

      Homepage:    http://hpinkjet.sourceforge.net

*FIXED*

Seems hpijs1.3 was released before foomatic so you need the latest version of foomatic. Install it manually and it works ... At least it did for me :D
