Sorry, some context...

This dialog shows a 5 minute countdown to a forced restart in Windows XP. The counter started out of the blue, after windows automatically downloaded and installed some patch of some type. This dialog was modal (a.k.a. always on top) and the close box was disabled - there was no way to cancel it.

I'm all for automatic updates (when secure & verified) but I just thought this was a new extreme, and pretty funny at that.

Yeah, that is pretty easy to see in that particular case. Also, if you still use WindowsXP at all then enable cleartype because it makes the fonts look better. Maybe not Xorg quality, but they still look better. That is done via:

Right-click desktop -> Properties -> Settings tab(or something like that) -> Effects button -> Font Rendering drop-box = change to Cleartype

I do not know how accurate that is though, because on all of the three boxes I have at my house, none of them run any form of Windows.

In all fairness it's more of a Linux thing than any Gentoo specific thing. Not having to reboot after installing any old piece of crap is a nice feature of Linux though.

The SP2 update totally slowed down my computer and gave me all kinds of problems like that. I now hardly ever boot into windows xp.

Happened to me yesterday when I installed a new version of Norton AV on a windows machine, it presented a box saying I *had* to reboot and only presented with an okay button...

Zone Alarm is that way too. I just ignore the box and go about my business.

That's about the point I realise (again) that I'm not in fact in the driver's seat.
On the bright side, it's quite handy because the reboot takes you back to the Grub screen ;-)

One thing that always pissed me off about windows, every new version is slower. Sometimes so slow, you need a new computer just to be able to run a OS!?!?!

Linux actually manages to improve speed with newer versions. Thats not just the kernel, but apps as well.

Not having to reboot after installing something in Linux is indeed a great feature, one that I'm getting better at taking advantage of... but in the early days of my transition to Linux, I almost always rebooted after an install or an update, so deeply ingrained was the "reboot required" adage of windows installations.

Bad habits die hard. But eventually they do die!!!

Just for referance .. you can abort the forced shutdown by running the "shutdown /a" command. Thought I do agree that it shouldn't do that at all.

I *think* shutdown /a only works with the system shutdowns initiated with the shutdown command

(run shutdown -i for a graphical interface and shutting down any computer on your network ;-))

Remember the blaster worm? The RPC restart thing, that's the kind of shutdown that shutdown /a will stop

If you have to use Windows then it's best to turn off automatic updates and just do it manually.

Forced restarts are stupid in Windows. Most of the time restarting explorer would suffice, or at the most logging off and logging on again. Unless there is a really big change like a new kernel or something.

Also what is with the clear type fonts (in the above example you need the appearence tab, not the settings tab) - for me they look blurry.
