EDIT:
Please read the thread and reference links before commenting.

Don't fall into the same trap as some in the beating the dead horse again part of the thread I split off. Thanks. --pjp

I just read an article a friend sent me (http://news.zdnet.co.uk/software/linuxunix/0,39020390,39175014,00.htm). It said 2005.0 release of Gentoo will have a GUI installer. Does anyone have any other sites or information on the 2005.0 release? One thing I would like to know is will the standard installer still lbe left in place, I set up Gentoo using the command line, I like that. Thanks for any information.

Also check out this rebuttal on slashdot:

And this, a comment to the original article:
http://www.zdnet.co.uk/talkback/?PROCESS=show&ID=20031923&AT=39175014-39020390t-10000004c

In short, it's kinda like that but in reality not at all.

And more importantly, check out the Gentoo Linux 2005.0 Story Clarification at www.gentoo.org.

Gentoo Linux 2005.0 Story Clarification
Posted on 30 November 2004 by Jeffrey Forman

As many of you already know, there was a recent article regarding the 2004.3 and 2005.0 releases posted on the ZDNet UK web site. In this article, the reporter presented much of the information given to her by Chris Gianelloni incorrectly. Chris does not think Mrs. Marson did this intentionally but rather out of a lack of understanding of some of the things she was told. Although the 2005.0 release will include an X-based experimental LiveCD, it will not be the primary release. The Release Engineering team plans to release 2005.0 just like 2004.3, with minimal, universal, and package CDs.

Another thing mentioned in the article was a graphical installer. Although there are plans on having a graphical installer for Gentoo, it is far from complete. Chris told Mrs. Marson that there would be a limited-functionality version of this installer on the experimental CD that would support AMD64 and x86. It will most likely be curses-based, or possibly GTK+, if the interface is completed, and it will not have any of the enterprise-ready features, such as machine cloning. At one point, Mrs. Marson quotes Chris as saying, "The graphical installer will have lots of facilities like Red Hat kickstart. You can create a script, containing details on, for example, what packages you want installed. You can then feed the same script to the installer on every machine, so that it will install identically." Chris did say this, but he also said this functionality would not be available for some time.

Although Mrs. Marson was correct in the features that will some day come to Gentoo, her timetable was incorrect. One thing that is definitely positive is that this has shed quite a bit of light on our installer project, which has been working away and deserves all our support. We can only hope that this will end up a positive experience for us all.

Moved from Other Things Gentoo.

Like brims I would like to know if the current way of installing things will still be present once the GUI installer is ready. Can anyone clarify this?

I'm glad for these clarifications, I don't want to loose my favorite distro to the likes of a RedHat style GUI installer.

Hey folks, let's just trust the devs! They've done a good job until now, just look how gentoo flourishes. I do believe they'll do a good job in the future. And after all, when the first beta versions are there, we can still focus our (hopefully positive) criticism on the actual installer, not only some rumors.

At least gentoo's got some more PR ;)

regards,
pi~

p.s.: duh, look at the advertisement and let the name speak for itself...

Given the popularity of the non-GUI install I doubt they will ever take that option away.

IMHO it's not good idea, because many of people, whos used nevbie-linux-dist. (mdk/aurox/etc) after few weeks going to Gentoo... :\ brrrr.... gentoo is not for beeginiers. its system for people whos loves tuning-sys (stages, flags, etc.) for they GUIinstall is superfluos. Compile from stageX with not graph installer is indispensable part of Gentoo!
greetz...

(sory, I'm dont speak english well, but You all understand ;) )

I see n00bs using Gentoo will be a major problem, but You (we?) cannot make them not do it... It's just their choice, usually...

A number of users has expressed interest in such an application to ease the current installation process. Many users new to Gentoo or Linux in general, find the installation process intimidating and even with a strong assurance of support and excellent documentation, they are reluctant to try. Some users have stated this to be the singular reason they have not moved to or tried Gentoo yet.

Look at this...

Looks like gentoo-guys want new-to-linux-people to start using this distro...

I don't see why people seem so against having people who are new to linux using Gentoo. I was relativly new to linux when I started with gentoo pre 1.0. I've used Gentoo as my only OS since then. The CLI installer is kinda nice (I like it), but really, I didn't learn anything about Gentoo or Linux by using it as opposed to the plethora of GUI installers out there. If some people want a GUI, let them have it, and if it brings more users to this wonderful distro, more power to them.

Disagree with all you've said:P Completely agree with

Good when more people decide to use a particular distro, but more people, who see a computer for the first time and start installing Gentoo means more n00b-like questions, which as I see some of us do not even want to see here...
