I've got my cd working just fine. Every CD player looks up the cd info and displays things like Black Dog, Rock and Roll, Battle of Evermore etc.

Then it goes to play it, and it very slowly plays the cd. only no sound comes out. ALSA is working. I've got sound. But the cd players don't seem to be able to move the sound from the cd to the speakers, even though they can read the cd just fine.

One exception to this is the alsaplayer. It can play the CD. But it's not as mature as other players (grip, KsCD, Kaboodle etc).

So how do I explain to my system that I want to hear the sound as well as see it?

Also I've noticed that the most recent emerge available for alsa-xmms is 9.5, yet 9.7 emerge is available in my /usr/portage/media-plugins/alsa-xmms
directory.

I'm not sure if this is the problem or not... But a lot (all?) cd players have a cord that connects to the sound card for transfering the audio to the speakers. That way it doesn't have to go across the IDE bus...

Do you have that cord connected? IIRC it's usually a fairly small wire.

I'll have to check in the morning, but I suspect you're right.
