I have just recently finished installing gentoo on a AMD 300 Mhz and i wanted to add as X windows BlackBox. The problem i am running in is the xf86config file. I am folowing all the proper instructions but something seems to go wrong all the time. I have tryied all the possible combinations and i keep getting this error
" Screens found but not have usable configuration "
and then it says
Fatal error:
no screens found
My videocard is ATI Mach64 (4 or 2 M of video memory)
So if anybody can help me please do.
Thank you in advance |

Which card driver are you using?
What resolutions (or modes) are you trying to run the box at?
Post your XF86Config file (/etc/X11/XF86Config) |

try using "X -configure" it is X's automatic configure script. It usually sets things up just fine on mine (sometimes I have to point it at my USB mouse - and change the resolutions if I want to).

UPDATE: Also pay attention to the output out of X -configure, it will tell you where the temporary XF86Config script is and how to run X using that script. To make it global you need to copy that script to /etc/X11 |
