I have an Asus P4B533-VM mother board with built-in Intel sound card:

Code:

>lspci
00:1f.5 Multimedia audio controller: Intel Corp. 82801DB AC'97 Audio (rev 01)

The kernel driver loads fine and two channel sound works OK.

Code:

>dmseg
i810: Intel ICH4 found at IO 0xa400 and 0xa800, IRQ 10
i810_audio: Audio Controller supports 6 channels.
ac97_codec: AC97 Audio codec, id: 0x414c:0x4720 (ALC650)
i810_audio: AC'97 codec 0 supports AMAP, total channels = 6

Unfortunately, I have trouble getting the surround sound to work, e.g. when playing a Dolby 5.1 DVD in Xine. I tried enabling both 4 and 6 channel output in Xine (I have a 4.1 Logitech speaker set), but all I get
is garbled sound from the front speakers and no sound from the back speakers.

Has anyone gotten this to work, either with the kernel driver or with ALSA? Before switching to ALSA, it would be good if somebody could confirm me it will work ;-)

AFAIK, the kernel driver for i810 is not complete (for example, it does not allow full duplex operation).

I am not sure you'll be able to get surround even with ALSA, but I am sure it is worth the try. I am using ALSA, since 0.9.0rc6 it is working well in my computer.

Please keep us updated, I really would like to know if it works 8)

Well, there seems to be some progress.

I installed ALSA, and now when playing mp3s I can at least hear sound from the rear speakers and modify their volume with alsamixergui (after I figured out there was a scrollbar to show me many more channels!).

DVDs with Dolby 5.1 or DTS still doesn't work, neither in xine nor mplayer, I just don't get any sound.

One positive side effect I got out the switch to alsa however, is that I'm now able to capture sound when recording from my TV card. So no fiddling with btaudio required.

Maybe you could try to recompile xine with alsa enabled (USE flag alsa). Don't know if it would make much difference

I have shuttle XPC with ICH4 and built in sound.

How do you enable support for the chipset and soundcard in the kernel as i couldn't see the option.

Thanks

I tried that, no luck unfortunately.

If you want the kernel module instead of alsa, you can enable it under 'sound', then look for intel. (The name of the module itself is i820_audio.o)

OK, I've got it all working now.

What I missed is that in Xine's configuration box, you have to fill out 'alsa09' as sound driver, and not just 'alsa'

Sound quality is as good as under Windows or the kernel driver, if you take care not to set the PCM mixer channel too high.
