.:: zen ::.

I have never used ALSA in my gentoo installation (USE="-ALSA"), I use the emu10k1 OSS drivers, and it stills segfaults.

I have tried updating everything (sdl-perl, libsdl, X, frozen-bubble, perl) to the latest version, but the segfaults are still there.

I remember it used to run fine before december...

So just to resume a bit. Do we have any solution for now? Anyone working on this? It's been almost 2 months now... For the people that have it working, what did you do?

Would be great to play Frozen Bubble again :) I know it's not an easy problem though. Thanks to all who worked or are working on the problem BTW.

I have tried almost everything mentioned in this thread short of hte emerge --emptytree thing, and the game still doesn't work for me. I really don't feel like wasting my computer for a day or more compiling all of that over again just for a game, although I must say I've been tempted :)

I recently did a clean install of Gentoo. Frozen-bubble still doesn't work. :(

Ok, so I lied...I did the emerge --emptytree anyway. Anyhow, not only does frozen-bubbles still not work, but the emerge screwed up my fonts in konsole. I searched the forums and found this thread:

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic.php?t=23757&highlight=konsole

My problem is exactly the same. Grrrr...

I have had also segfaults with frozen-bubble :?

After searching the net for this problem I found the solution!

Apparently the problem is the nvidia driver! Switching back to the nv driver gives you a running frozen-bubble! Unbelievable, isn't it? I hope this will get fixed either by nvidia or frozen-bubble.
This is really weird...

ps: i was using nvidia-kernel-1.0.3123-r2

Interesting...is anyone using the 1.0.4191 driver with frozen-bubbles by chance?

that's what I'm trying to do, and it's segfaulting.

I'll try it with the nv driver soon. hmm, it also crashed on a vnc session, and that doesn't use the nvidia driver....

I changed to the nv driver and commeted out 'Load "glx"' and I still get a segfault. I was using nvidia-kernel-1.0.3123-r2.

ok I'm running that driver with segfaults, I changed my config to use nv and restarted X and it crashed, rebooted (make sure the module was never loaded) and it still crashed.

I would say that the nvidia driver isn't the problem, but I could be wrong...

ok, first make sure that you run:
Code:

# opengl-update xfree

and second, the glx module must be loaded in your XF86Config. It segfaults without.

I hope I could help. Possible, that this is no driver issue, but this "hack" works for me.

This worked for me. Thanks your help. Obviously not the best solution in the world, but it works for now.

Well you have to be running as root, and have the package 'x11-base/opengl-update' installed.

Heh good I thought I was the only one that couldn't run this. Hopefully they find a fix for it pretty soon, it's a great game, tons of fun, and fun to show off to my Windows friends.

So the bottom line is, if you are using the Nvidia-kernel and glx stuff, you need to run
Code:
opengl-update xfree
as root to play frozen bubble. I was getting the SDL error and using the above solution works for me.

And I'm guessing this returns to the Nvidia drivers?

Code:

opengl-update nvidia

Yes, correct.

Does anybody have a working Frozen Bubble with the Nvidia drivers?
If so, which version of the drivers?

if I type "opengl-update xfree" before starting frozen-bubble it works but hangs in the game menu if I click on 1 player game, when I type opengl-update nvidia I have the segmention fault again ;(

I'm running NV drivers (3123) and frozen bubbles works perfectly for me. I'm using ALSA, perl 5.8.0.

I'm *not* using, Gnome, or KDE. I'm running this on flux. Maybe something going on with WM's is the issue. Has anyone tried contacting the author and directing him here?

Currently I'm using KDE 3.1_rc6 with the Nvidia drivers 4191. The opengl-update xfree solution works great for me...I don't even have to restart X with the nv driver. I had the same problems back with the 3123 drivers and kde 3.0.5. I can't think of any reason other than the GL drivers themselves being at fault. The way I see it, everyone will probably either have to wait for nvidia to fix whatever problem there is, or for the auther of frozen-bubbles to see if they can fix the code to work with nvidia drivers. I wonder if having the KDE use flag somehow created a dependancy for one of the libraries involved with frozen-bubbles such that opengl libraries would screw it up.

my drivers...
nvidia-glx 1.0.3123
nvidia-kernel 1.0.3123-r2
alsa-driver 0.9.0_rc6
and perl perl-5.8.0-r9

and I use fluxbox too but it doesn` t work ;(

/edit
now it works but I have to change the driver in XF86Config to "nv" and "opengl-update xfree" but that isn`t comfortable, because I`m playing other games like quake3 and for this game I need the NV drivers...
